Sources edit

How is Google Earth a source for information about a road's location? Isn't that original research? Wikipelli Talk 16:21, 6 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's on a few other LA Highway articles I didn't create, so I assumed it was fine. More sources on the way! --Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 16:24, 6 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Can you give the link to one? I'd like to check something. Wikipelli Talk 16:25, 6 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
As you requested, a link to one. Louisiana Highway 807 - one source is dead and the other is Google Earth. :) --Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 16:26, 6 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
If another is needed - Louisiana Highway 444. --Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 16:28, 6 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

No, that's fine. It bothers me... Mostly because it's like citing a book and just linking to Google Books without linking to the specific book. Seems like you'd want to link to a specific site on Google Maps or Earth, like, http://maps.google.com/maps/place?q=Morehouse+Country+Club&cid=14189339627115617695 But, I can see problems with that, too. Perhaps using coordinates would be better. Just pointing to Google Earth seems rather like you're telling the readers to go find it for themselves. Wikipelli Talk 19:01, 6 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Actually, look at a handful of Featured Articles on highways that use Google Maps (not Google Earth, please!) and you'll see a much better practice: driving directions. If you set up the directions from one of the highway to the other, and get the URL for those directions, you can paste that URL into {{google maps}}. Otherwise, what is done isn't verifiable. For examples, look at U.S. Route 41 in Michigan, M-185 (Michigan highway) or M-6 (Michigan highway). Imzadi 1979  22:38, 6 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Minimum amount of cleanup edit

I did this edit to apply some minimal cleanup, and this article still needs major work.

  • I didn't know that the US was a county, and since it isn't, I removed that error from the infobox. Please add the |parishes parameter with the correct content.
  • Junctions should be using {{jct}} to generate the proper graphic/link combination.
  • In American English, and the title of the website, it's "Southeast Roads". (Please don't use other variations of English for a subject with very clear geographic connections to the United States; secondarily it's very poor form to re-spell the name of a source.) Since that's a self-published source, and not needed, I removed it.
  • We need to provide conversions for measurements in non-metric systems for international readers.
  • The abbreviation ("LA 593") should be in bold per MOS:BOLD, and the other highways should be abbreviated consistently.
  • I used the standard section headings for US highway articles, per WP:USRD/STDS.
  • The link to "Morehouse" is disambiguation page, which doesn't link to anything in Louisiana, so I removed it.
  • The junction list needs to be redone to comply with MOS:RJL, as a table. What was there provides little to no context.
  • I attempted to correct some of the citations using {{cite map}} or {{google maps}}, but all of the references need attention.
  • There are specific stub templates for each state in the US, all of which are listed on WP:USRD/STUB.
