Schools edit

Not sure that we should be listing all the primary schools in the Borough - it looks ugly! Possibly the secondary schools, but even that just ends up being a long list rather than prose. Paulbrock 00:13, 19 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The list may be ugly but I think it is better to be complete. Regarding "Further education" - since when did further education refer to over 16s? Over 18s surely? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.129.162.31 (talk) 11:10, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

In many boroughs, it's been spun out as an external list - List of schools in the London Borough of Bexley viz:. Strictly, there should not be external links within the articles. One reason for listing schools on, or linked to the borough pages is to prevent long duplicate lists being created for each 'neighbourhood' ..
It is an aspiration to have articles for all secondary schools, but I think it is useful to list the primaries too ... cheers Kbthompson 11:25, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Assessment & improvement edit

It's obviously not a stub any more. To improve this article:

  1. Reduce use of lists, consider turning lists to prose, consider spinning them out to specific topic linked lists (even then, the list should be supported by as much prose as possible). eg List of schools in the London Borough of Bexley, Politics in the London Borough of Bexley (for results table). Lengthy lists and tables break up the text and distract the reader from substantive information.
  2. In order to use the coat of arms, there needs to be a 'critical commentary' in the text - some info is available here. The text shouldn't be copied verbatim!

Definitely needs improvement! edit

I agree wholeheartedly with both the comments above. I have only had a quick look at some of the parts of this article, and already found five errors. Fire Brigade ref leads to an error page, for example (a minor fault - it's changed!)

The worst error occurs with those terrible lists. The schools one can be catered for by a separate article, as it is in any case not in line with most other London Boroughs - cp List of schools in the London Borough of Bromley, which then completely obviates the need for a list here. I would however suggest that even that latter list doesn't completely answer the point since school names don't often say where the actual school is within the Borough: but that's another thing to be tackled, since all other similar Lists have the same problem! The usual thing then is to mention specific schools if they have something special to say - generally the secondary schools. See Wikipedia:WikiProject London

And then there are the twin lists: Localities and Political composition. This shows that there is a lack of understanding about the difference between the two kinds of area. Localities means named settlements on a map, and many of those in this suburban environment are ancient villages/towns with much modern infill - and they have variable populations. They vary in size and can usually be pinpointed as to where they are. On the other hand the wards are purely a political construct, and are so designed to contain a relatively constant population, so that the ward councillors represent equal populations: each ward is given a name.

And there is where this article shows its ignorance. Both lists purport to refer a reader back specifically to that named area. A look through the wards quoted will show how it just doesn't add up. Glaring examples are Cray Meadows which leads to the River Cray article; Danson Park which only vaguely has anything about the ward itself; Lesnes Abbey which doesn't refer to the ward at all; and then the list gives up on four of the others! Surely all that is required is the map, which perfectly caters for the names of the wards, and nothing else apart from a reference to it?

Articles on London boroughs should IMO be catered for like any other article when a geographical area is concerned. The article on how to write about settlements is a very good basis for the rewrite. I shall make this my next project. Peter Shearan (talk) 07:31, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have made a start this evening. At the risk of getting brickbats, I shall most likely delete all the lists about the wards in their entirety - the reference I have given shows not only all that information, but photographs as well. If it can be found that easily, what is the point in retyping it? Peter Shearan (talk) 21:21, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have done most of the work now - I intended looking through the Extrenal links, which are probably only general topics and not specific enough? Peter Shearan (talk) 17:54, 29 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
