Talk:List of transgender publications

Notability edit

We've got kind of a mish mash here of notable publications and less than notable novels and memoirs. There are thousands of books on the topic. How shall we define notability? Bkatcher (talk) 22:01, 14 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Bkatcher: Yup, agreed. After reading WP:LISTN, WP:LSC, and WP:SOURCELIST, I made a start at selection criteria; I look forward to your feedback. —Ringbang (talk) 02:35, 25 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Selection criteria edit

Prerequisites edit

Before evaluating a work's notability, we should make sure it's relevant to the list, and within its scope.

Must be on-topic edit

Although the word transgender is sometimes used in a very broad and inclusive way, this list is not the best place to list works that focus on drag, cross-dressing, or intersex. Although these topics overlap, much of their literature is distinct. For publications about intersex, there is Literature about intersex. There is enough published material about cross-dressing and drag to populate dedicated list articles as well.

Must be substantial edit

Works in which transgender is incidental or marginal dilute the list and make it more difficult to find the most relevant works. Therefore, for all entries, at least one of the following must be true:

  1. Transgender is either the subject of the work or a major theme.
  2. The main character is unambiguously transgender. (No original research is involved in interpreting the gender of a character.)
  3. The work is a well-regarded LGBTQI anthology with significant transgender content.

Evidence of notability edit

For books edit

The golden rule applies, and notability is established the same as for articles about books, but with relaxed requirements for the extent of coverage. One or two reliable sources that attest the work's literary value or contribution are sufficient. (See the general notability guideline and the notability guideline for books.)

A work with scant coverage might still be worthy of inclusion if it's a canonical example of some facet of transgender thought or experience; or if it's a memoir, (auto)biography, correspondence collection, or diary of a notable transgender person.

For periodicals edit

As we check and revise the article's entries, I hope we'll spot ways that we can improve selection criteria to make List of transgender publications a better and better resource. Thoughts?

For information, a page already exists on Literature about intersex, and it is substantially different from this list. Trankuility (talk) 16:33, 25 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ministry of Utmost Happiness edit

Arundhati Roy's The Ministry of Utmost Happiness has a hijra as one of its primary characters and merits inclusion in the list of fiction. Everybody got to be somewhere! (talk) 22:28, 1 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
