Salisbury and Sarum?

Salisbury (New Sarum) has city walls. Old Sarum, the hilltop former location of the city, was also fortified since the Neolithic period.

Chester

City of London

London Wall lies within the City of London, which is a county and is not part of the county of Greater London. This can hardly be a point of debate: Greater London is only a county in the sense of it being a ceremonial county (which are the counties being used in the article) and in this regard does not include the City of London, which is a separate county. The City only forms part of the region and administrative area of [Greater] London (the region is actually called simply "London"). David (talk) 19:07, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

I had never noticed until now that the City of London was included amongst ceremonial counties. In my view the purpose of division into 'counties' is a division into geographical areas as distinct from administrative areas. Excluding the City of London from the area of Greater London is evidently correct in terms of identifying ceremonial counties, but is an anomaly in terms of identifying regions - Greater London becomes, I think, the only region with a hole in the middle. I think my vote would be to replace 'Greater London' with, simply, 'London'. Being seen to be strict about counties will complicate matters for places in Wales. I'd accept "London". As for Wales, the article mixes the Preserved counties of Wales and the modern-day "principal areas" (the local authorities). Really one should be chosen to be used in the article, for uniformity. David (talk) 20:44, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

I would argue that, given the purpose is division into geographical areas, usefulness is more relevant than uniformity. The current set of 'counties' for Wales represents an attempt to find the most useful geographical division, whilst avoiding conflicts with current administrative boundaries. A similar division is used in some other lists, such as the List of golf courses in the United Kingdom. Since the list of town walls is relatively short, the choice will not actually make a great deal of difference here. Paravane (talk) 22:36, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

I'd suggest a mention in the lead, perhaps as part of a paragraph on post-medieval town fortifications. So far as I am aware, besides being post-medieval, they were built in response to a short-term situation and were short-lived, in contrast to the other fortifications listed here.
