Talk:List of top international men's football goal scorers by country/Archive 2

Key

I want to add a key to this table and am looking for input:

Key
Bold Indicates that the player is still active with their national team
Italics Indicates that the player has the record number of appearances for their national team
Indicates that the player's national team recognises matches played in the Olympic Games or in Olympic qualifiers
U Indicates that the player's statistics are unverified

Let me know if you have any suggestions or opinions on the matter! Felixsv7 (talk) 15:41, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

It doesn't seem like a bad idea. But you have to be careful when executing the idea. YangerAAS (talk) 15:34, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

Former countries section

I think it would more logical to create a section for former countries. Now, a country like Russia inherit a topscorer from USSR (why Russia and not Georgia or Kazakhstan or any other ex soviet republic ?) and have a topscorer who is not even russian but ukrainian. It does not make any sense. Cayzel (talk) 2:44, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

@Cayzel: This is because Russia was officially recognised as the successor to the Soviet Union by FIFA and therefore received all of their records. This is mentioned in the note affixed to the Soviet Union. Felixsv7 (talk) 13:59, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

@Felixsv7: Is there any source about that? Because on the page about the team of Russia, the topscorer is Dzyuba, and not any player from USSR. Cayzel (talk) 12:27, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

@Cayzel: As that list states, it deliberately doesn't include players who played for the Soviet Union, instead it links to the USSR page as the two pages were divided (I believe back in 2008). FIFA made the decision in 1994 when it had to decide which qualifying group to stick all of the new states into and named Russia as the continuation of the Soviet Union to replace the USSR in it's already drawn place. Felixsv7 (talk) 13:07, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

@Felixsv7: Replacing in qualification didn't mean they inherit all from the USSR National Team. By the way, if you have a look at the website of the Russian Federation, their calendar starts in 1992. https://rfs.ru/national/calendar Cayzel (talk) 14:13, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

@Cayzel: So here's the history: USSR dissolved at the end of 1991 having already qualified for Euro 1992, therefore at the beginning of 1992 the Commonwealth of Independent States national team was created to allow the players who'd qualified a chance to compete and was recognised as the successor of the USSR team (page 101 of this report). Then, the decision as to who would obtain the records held by USSR was taken on 1 June 1992 at the FIFA Executive Committee, giving them to Russia. The same thing happened with Yugoslavia to Serbia. Felixsv7 (talk) 14:35, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

@Felixsv7: Your source only said the CIS was provisionally recognised as the successor of the USSR Football Federation. Not anything which would corroborate that Russia inherit records from USSR. By the way, on russian wikipedia they consider Dzyuba and Kerzhakov as topscorer of Russia, not Blokhin. Cayzel (talk) 14:57, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

@Cayzel: Yeah, because they are the top scorers for Russia. However Russia are the successors of the USSR so they inherit their records... Not sure how many times I can repeat the same information. Soviet Union national football team and Russian Football Union also state the same thing. Sadly the minutes for the 3 June 1992 FIFA Executive Committee meeting don't seem to be available but that was where it was apparently decided. We can't just rewrite history just for the hell of it! Felixsv7 (talk) 15:07, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

@Cayzel: Just to confirm this: Scroll along to 1992 Felixsv7 (talk) 15:14, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

---

There are three former FIFA members whose records, according to whoever decides that, are definitely not inherited by anyone: East Germany, Saar and South Yemen. Currently East Germany is in the list, but there's no mention of the other two. I think they should be added, whether in the existing section or in a new one. --Theurgist (talk) 11:53, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

@Theurgist: The only issue is that we don't have a source for South Yemen's top scorer. I've mocked up the potential table below. Felixsv7 (talk) 13:35, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

List of former FIFA top scorers

These are the top scorers for former nations that do not have a FIFA recognised successor team.

As of 7 October 2020
Players in bold are still active at international level.
Players in italics also hold the record for most caps for their nation.
Rank Player Country International goals Caps Goals per match First cap Last cap Ref.
1 Joachim Streich   East Germany 55 102 0.54 8 December 1969 20 October 1984 [1]
2 Herbert Binkert   Saar 6 12 0.5 27 May 1951 6 June 1956 [2]
Herbert Martin 6 17 0.35 22 November 1950 6 June 1956 [3]
@Felixsv7: Yes, that's how I imagine the table too. A few things though. First, it doesn't need an "as of" date – these records are set and won't ever change. Second, South Yemen still could be included in the table, with its row saying that the top scorer is unknown. Wikipedia isn't expected to be the ultimate know-it-all; it just reports data – or lack thereof – and such a disclosure would be in the interest of transparency and would invite readers to try to discover the information themselves. And third, do you have an actual source by FIFA explicitly stating the connections among the Yemeni teams? When their website still had pages on the World Cup qualifiers, it listed South Yemen as "  YEMEN PDR" and North Yemen as just "  YEMEN", but I guess we'll need something better than that. Meanwhile, another source, eloratings.net, actually groups South Yemen's (and Aden's) results together with those of Yemen, and has a separate page for North Yemen. --Theurgist (talk) 19:16, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Successor team

@YangerAAS: I don't think we need a table with the scorers for nations that have a successor team as their top scorers are already included in the above table. Their records have continued on despite the initial nation no longer existing. What do you think? Felixsv7 (talk) 09:42, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

Rank Player Country International goals Caps Goals per match First cap Last cap Ref.

I understand the reason for removing this article as it is not necessary, but I would prefer to keep the article because it is technically a selection that no longer exists and also to have more information about the selections that no longer exist (even with teams that don't have much information like North Yemen and South Vietnam) that have a FIFA-recognized successor. The 5 other site links are like this for my amateurishness in adding the access links to the sites. YangerAAS (talk) 15:51, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
