Talk:List of surnames in Ukraine

Unsure if this is Ukranian edit

Mila Kunis was born in Ukraine, but I don't know if her surname is Ukrainian, so I hesitate to add it. 2602:301:779A:FC0:45CF:661C:BDEE:DBF1 (talk) 00:49, 5 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Definitely not. She was born to Jewish parents, so I guess her surname is Jewish as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:A31A:A044:5D80:AE0F:41F1:400C:691D (talk) 14:40, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

What is the purpose of this list? edit

It by far doesn't enumerate all possible surnames of ethnic Ukrainians, or of citizens of Ukraine. It doesn't seem to be the list of most popular surnames either.

It doesn't even list all surnames mentioned in the Ukrainian Wikipedia. For example, there are about 20 articles about people named Ilchenko, but this surname is not on the list.

Many surnames in the list are not exclusively Ukrainian — they may belong to Russians, Belarussians, Poles, Slovaks etc., which may or may not have any association with Ukraine.

There are a lot of incorrect transliterations — for example, Tyahnybok is actually spelled "Тягнибок", not "Тяагнибок".

Not all surnames in the list are actually Ukrainian — for example, Zherdev is in fact a Russian surname, even though it may be beared by Ukrainians of Russian descent.

Many links to the Ukrainian Wikipedia point to empty articles, even when the Ukrainian Wikipedia actually has articles about people with this surname.

Whatever is the actual intent of this list, I'd say that it is not achieved at all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:A31A:A044:5D80:AE0F:41F1:400C:691D (talk) 14:37, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Maybe the purpose of the list should be stated more clearly in the article. From the description that is there, I understand that it’s intended to be or become an inventory of all surnames (not just Ukrainian ones) occurring in Wikipedia articles about people from Ukraine in any language, in particular Ukrainian and English. Of course, the usefulness of such a list can be questioned :) except as a possible inspiration for translating Ukrainian articles into English.
Oh, wait, I had missed the first sentence: "This list is to help find orphaned articles" – only I’m not sure what an "orphaned article" is – one existing in Ukrainian but not in English, maybe?--Geke (talk) 05:22, 28 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
