Probably need citations

Lists such as this have a nasty habit of attracting speculative information. Remember that, even in place name articles themselves, lists of notable people get a lot of uncited claims. Since this list isn't even in the articles, I suspect it's going to attract even more speculation, and readers will erroneously assume some particular entry has been verified by a citation in another place, because of the explicit wording in the intro. I think references need to be added for each one of these, even if those references are cut-and-paste from the relevant article. I noticed an editor has been working hard to gather up a lot of etymologies recently, so now would be the time to get the citations, instead of after the list doubles or triples. --Closeapple (talk) 16:38, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

• referencing each individually would be a tremendous under taking, not to mention resulting in a unwieldy list of references. I recommend reordering the list by states (for better navigation) and then do one reference per state. There are two well regarded books that cover etymology for all North Dakota places and one fairly good one for South Dakota.[1] Google books has many public domain available for other states, or we inquire if the various wikiprojects. The citations can link to the isbn or olc search page for any books not online. All that matters is that the citation be given so someone knows where to look, even if that is in a brick and mortar library as opposed to a website.DCmacnut<> 04:23, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
