The Halifax Pals

I've seen this error made elsewhere, but the 12th KOYLI were never termed a Pals battalion- even though they were raised independently of the War Office and drew their recruits primarily from a single occupation. They certainly weren't raised in Halifax either: that falls squarely in the Calderdale recruiting district of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, whereas the KOYLI were based in South Yorkshire and the battalion was recruited from the coalfields between Leeds and Pontefract. Locally raised

The list is only of 'locally raised' battalions. I think the concept 'locally raised' ought to be defined. No For example, no Dorsetshire battalion is in the list. Surely, at least in normal English, the service battalions of the Dorsetshires were 'locally raised' in Dorchester. So it seems that 'locally raised' is meant here in some special, unobvious sense, which should be explained.14:05, 17 August 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Llezsoeg (talk • contribs)

'X Pals' as name

A pals battalion was a battalion belonging in a certain category, ie it was locally raised. The article lists those in that category. But not every battalion in that pals battalion category used the word ‘Pals’ in its name at the time. Thus, eg, the 13th York and Lancaster was widely known at the time as ‘1st Barnsley Pals’, but the 14th Hampshire was NOT known at the time as ‘1st Portsmouth Pals’. (I know because I’ve checked through the archive of the local newspaper). In general, pals battalions in the north of the country were widely known at the time as ‘the X Pals’ and those in the south were not. I think it would be useful to mention that this distinction existed. Even better, though a lot of work, would be to say for each battalion whether it was or was not known at the time as ‘the X Pals’.Llezsoeg (talk) 00:37, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
