I am currently substantially editing this list because many titles ceased print publication last year (2020) during the first Covid outbreak. Quite a number of other newspaper titles began in the same geographical areas later the same year.Ktweeddale (talk) 07:12, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

This is a very large list (in excess of 2,000 individual titles). In order to make the list accessible for the reader a couple of decisions were made:

Naming conventions edit

  • The first column of the tables is now not sortable, allowing the titles to be listed with the definite article (The) at the beginning but remain in alphabetical order. Aliaretiree (talk) 05:48, 20 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • All variations of the title of a newspaper, as used in publication, are listed individually. In most cases the variations will all point to a single article about the paper. Aliaretiree (talk) 05:48, 20 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Date ranges edit

  • The date ranges indicated for the papers are drawn from the catalogue of the State Library of New South Wales, the legal deposit library for all NSW publications. An alternative source that can also be consulted is the Trove (National Library of Australia) catalogue.

Geographic regions edit

  • The Sydney and suburban papers out as far as Hornsby, Penrith, Campbelltown and Sutherland area are identified as Sydney region.
  • Historically many of the older papers date from a time when the urban sprawl of the Sydney region did not extend this far, but it is possible to sort the tables by date to filter this information. Aliaretiree (talk) 12:08, 19 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

serving area edit

many are listed at Milson's Point ? there are searches showing that micro-fiche are obtained from a company based in MP, but that's not the area the paper covered. Dave Rave (talk) 19:33, 21 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Locations verified against Trove and SLNSW catalogue entries and list article updated. Aliaretiree (talk) 01:44, 23 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

This list edit

Is beyond manageable access for an average user of wikipedia and needs to be changed. Too long and too big. Strong suggestion is to separate Sydney from rest of SW, and possible regional lists (as we are doing in Western Australia). JarrahTree 05:49, 24 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Can we start by separating current from defunct titles? I wanted to see what newspapers are still current in Sydney, but couldn't do this without clicking on the status button on 20 odd separate lists! --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 16:15, 4 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
