List of musicians at English cathedrals

Could people adding the details of cathedrals and their musicians please make the entries comply with the form used for existent entries?

• Because MOS says that you cannot link a section heading within an article, every cathedral needs a short sentence in which the name of the cathedral is linked to its article page i.e.

"Notable musicians at Barchester Catheral include Septimus Harding."

• Unless the list is very short indeed, put it in three columns.

Minsters

Could the article be expanded to include English minsters? Or is there scope for a List of musicians at English minsters? I've got Leeds Minster in mind, which has a more notable musical history than Leeds Cathedral. PamD 14:52, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

There are quite a number of minsters. If a large number of them have an important musical history, (which I suppose they do) then it would be of benefit to make a new article, linked to this one, rather than make this article much longer. Only Church of England?

This appears to only cover Church of England cathedrals. Please expand it to cover cathedrals of other denominations, notably Westminster Cathedral. Verbcatcher (talk) 00:26, 12 May 2019 (UTC)

Removing organ scholars

This article is poorly referenced yet keeps growing with the addition of further unsourced entries. I propose removing all organ scholars - they are invariably non-notable upon appointment and their appointments are rarely discussed in reliable sources, their departures even less so. If these are removed we’ll be covering organists/DoMs and their assistants only, and will be in a better position to insist on a source for each new entry.—--Pontificalibus 07:34, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

I think this has been a poor decision. Organ Scholars have been and continue to be invaluable Cathedral Musicians. This narrow minded approach won’t allow people to discover that, for example, James Vivian was Organ Scholar (and then Acting Assistant Organist at Lincoln Cathedral during his gap year). One of the great benefits of this page (before its edit) was to see the full history of Cathedrals Organists, and their appointment histories, both as assistants and scholars. Wikipedia relies on Verifiability through citations to reliable sources. Whilst it may be beneficial to have a page that lists organ scholars, as I mentioned above such information is typically not published in reliable sources, so it isn't possible to include it in this encyclopedia. We can't just have a page to which anyone can add names with no sources or fact-checking, as I'm sure you would agree an inaccurate list of organs scholars would not be useful at all. There are still a large number of unreferenced organist and assistant organist entries on this page, so I would suggest the focus should be on finding sources for these. With regard to James Vivian the best place to include details of his career (as with other notable organists) would be on the article about him, which anyone viewing this page can access by clicking on his name. I note that in his particular case there is now reliable published source mentioning his organ scholarship, and I have just taken the opportunity to use this source to add that information to his page.----Pontificalibus 07:11, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

I have just added my name back to an Organ Scholars list at Peterborough, the source being me. When I understand Wiki a bit more I will put up a page with full career details. The previous correspondent was right, many organ scholars work their way through the system. I spent a month as Acting Assistant DoM and a fortnight as acting DoM leading to me being appointed DoM at Dundee at 21, the youngest in the UK. I'm well out of it in Parish life now, however feel that such a site should recognise such monumental achievements such as James and myself. Organ1st2002 (talk) 21:43, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not here to recognise so called monumental achievements, it is here to be an encyclopedia and as an encyclopedia it relies on Reliable Sources and topics that be notable enough to be included.--VViking_TalkEdits 14:53, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
