Unicode characters Emotions section generic representations

The Unicode characters Emotions table should use the generic representations outlined in the Unicode standard 6.1 instead of the corporate representations of them (I believe the current set is the Microsoft set) this would make more sense as the table is suppose to be illustrating the Unicode Emoticon standard not the generated representations.

The "Lenny face"

Sadly it's not a reliable source, and some editors periodically go through Wikipedia removing all citations based on it. It's essentially a wiki, like everything2, h2g2, etc - however, if the page links to any Reliable Sources, those can be utilized. –Quiddity (talk) 04:32, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Not done: the first link you gave is just a Google search, the second a forum. You need to link to pages, not just tell us half a facebook user's name and have us search for something. Facebook isn't a reliable source anyway. I haven't seen <ref nofollow> before. Kudos to you for knowing it, but please could you avoid using it (or any form of <ref>) in edit requests like this. Can the people editing this page just relax?

I just want to say, I understand Wikipedia is supposed to be all sourced and verifiable content, but when dealing with emoticons there is NO SUCH THING as verifiable content. It is content made by people looking at a character map and making new emoticons based on feelings. This may be an inherent flaw in Wikipedia, but really, common sense should dictate that articles such as these should operate under more lax rules due to the inherent untraceable nature of emoticons themselves. Even if a source for an emoticon is 'verifiable', how does one make sure that that source didn't pull it from an 'unverifiable' source? What I'm trying to say is, when dealing with internet culture, there are no verifiable or unverifiable sources, only common sense as to what the current meaning of the emoticon is, which quite frankly is something the community at large should decide on in talk pages, not just a few people moderating the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.77.157.99 (talk) 12:05, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Eastern vs. Western

There should be some explanation of what is meant by "Eastern" vs. "Western" emoticons. I can guess the meaning but I'd prefer it either explain what's meant or just be switched to "Vertical" and "Horizontal" which is a more objective/descriptive & less questionable. 12.11.149.5 (talk) 21:31, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

The entire article's current "categorisation" of Eastern/Western is flawed and poor to begin with. The article initially separated 2channel emoticons used in Japan from another subset of "Eastern" emoticons which were completely unrelated to one another, however for some reason, the two sections were merged together. In my opinion, this article's current state is very poor, and really needs a revamp.

As an explanation of what I mean, ^_^ was originally used on Korean internet forums, and was never once used as a mainstream "thing" in Japan; meanwhile, Japanese emoticons such as （*´▽｀*） are hardly used elsewhere by non-Japanese speakers, because inputting those characters requires a Japanese IME, and its correct display relies on a fullwidth or a shift_JIS based font, such as Mona. It's still an unnecessary generalisation. The commonname of the continent west of Europe and Africa is "The Americas", but I'm pretty sure some people in the United States, Cuba and Argentina would be left with a sour taste in their mouth if I said that "(insert South American war criminal here) is an American". The origins of the Korean and the 2channel emoticons are remarkably different, just like how a Columbian cocaine cartel boss has nothing to do with the United States. Just so everyone knows what I'm referring to here, this is what the article looked like at 05:56, 7 January 2012 (UTC). There were three sections, namely "western" (emoticons originally used in English-speaking websites), "eastern" (emoticons used on South Korean and Southeast Asian websites, largely typed using ASCII characters), and "2channel" (emoticons unique to Japan's BBS boards, their derivatives, NicoNico Douga, and domestic blogs; often involve double-byte character encodings). For some reason, "Eastern" and "2channel" were merged together sometime afterwards. Separating the article into these three sections had been the original de facto status quo for many years, since 20:55, 6 May 2007 (UTC) if not earlier, and prior to the section merge. Please, a reliable source means you can check and depend on. So, 12 years on the net with a few modifications, on a personal website, with a few studies on(french)world-known fables of La Fontaine, for years to day with top results on best search engines, should be enough to be checked and trusted, for such an add.

More, an emoticon crossing languages, should need no translations to access. As the result is matching with the (famous photo and drawings) portrait of 1926 by F.Schmutzer, imediatly given on source Sigmund Freud, and the sources published and checked what kind of trick or weakness to fear ?

As a fairly old now Wikipedia contributor in french (and even scarce ones in english, but it was easier years ago), to day, I (or we both?)would reply no, to all these questions:

Vandalism, anyway? A fake? Is that unfair information? Are there copyright violations? Is it false ? Inacurate? Redundant? Irrelevant? Is it misleading? Does it spoils anything, anybody, or anybody's works?

So is it just a little piece of valuable new information improving a far more complete article? Now it's up to you, and may be further to wikipedia readers and/or builders to tell about . : (Of course, should it be a bait or a lead to have a look or to taste more of... everything, science, french literature, La Fontaine's fables... or Freud... or just a...  ;-) .

Note: Welcome. I think you and I have different interpretations of reliable. The reliable source policy we use here frowns on self-published sources without regard to the age of the source. I agree, though, that there is little cost to the project if this were included, so this is more principle than practical. I'll leave the request open and won't comment if someone else chooses to implement this. If you'd like to persue whether this is reliable, WP:RSN is the best venue for discussing that.  Not done. Wikipedia is not the place to right great wrongs, and the emoticon indeed is used in 2ch and other Japanese forums to represent girlishness. Changing this would be inserting blatant falsehoods into this page. If you have complaints about gender inequality, I suggest complaining to the nation of Japan first.

If you live in the United States, the Japanese embassy can be contacted at (202) 238-6700, hopefully you can convince the government of Japan to instruct the Japanese populace not to use the emoticon in such a manner, so that it conforms with western sociopolitical ideology. Emoticons as plaintext will work anywhere, even if it's not even on a computer. However, you're probably talking about the emoji that Facebook turns some emotes into, in which case, it's probably just the most common ones that do work. I would fully support it's inclusion. I first became aware of the background of the salutation in 1979, and as it is from my shared ethnic culture, I have always felt a deep affinity with it. I am glad that so many are aware of it's original roots. I remember a line from TOS episode "Amok Time", after Spock apparently "kills" JTK in a ritual duel. "Live long and prosper, Spock" Spock replies, "I shall do neither, for I have killed my captain and my best friend". 3 small suggestions

(1) A few of the emoticons in the main list are readable without tilting one's head (for example, the loopy-eyed O_o). This variation should be explicitly noted somehow, perhaps with a footnote.

(2) The introductory paragraph mentions that a } may be used to indicate a beard. Similarly, a ~ may be used as a goatee.

(3) I'm not sure if this even qualifies as an emoticon, since it doesn't depict a face as such, but ((( U ))) means "hugs for you".

I don't have the skill set to edit this page, but perhaps someone else can.

Spaces between emoticons

I am adding extra spaces between the Western and Eastern emoticons to make them easier to read. I found that at a quick glance I had trouble at times telling where one ended and the next began. However, I'm not sure if the 2channel emoticons need extra spacing too, because I hardly understand them at all. - The entry for Rose under Sideways Latin-only single-line art and portraits is unclear as it has multiple emoticons in the same table box, and should be formatted like the table for Sideways Latin-only emoticons .

- All the entries in the tables for Kaomoji faces and Other Eastern emoticons also have multiple emoticons with no separation between.

- The entry for Despair under Other Eastern emoticons should be re-explained as a representation of a person in a kneeling position (Japanese Dogeza). See Emoticon#Orz

Cat-related emojis :3c and >:3c

The addition of the character c is used to denote a paw held up to the cat(or lion)'s face. This can indicate a cat that is pondering something in general, or in the case of >:3c, mischief. This is an emoticon that I personally had a lot of trouble understanding before it was explained to me, so in my opinion it makes sense to include this on a page explaining emoticons. :X miscategorized?

The :X emoticon is listed as "sealed lips" but in my experience this one is used to indicate illness or holding back vomit (analogous to 🤢). s2 as a heart emoticon

I've seen "s2" be used as a heart emoticon pretty frequently in Brazil, especially in the late 2000s/early 2010s. I'm not sure if it's used elsewhere, too, but yeah. It even shows up in online dictionary websites and Urban Dictionary equivalents (in Portuguese), so it might be a good idea to put that here in the article somewhere? 186.212.87.203 (talk) 20:40, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Under 'evil/devilish smiley' the left-most column second-row has a normal smiley :) All the other second row smileys are the same as the first row, minus a nose (hyphen)

Given that the smiley above it is >:-) the :) smiley should actually be >:)
