Foreshock/mainshock v. Doublet edit

Many earthquakes occur as clusters that do not follow the archetypal sequence of foreshocks-mainshock-aftershocks. Two earthquakes with very similar epicentres, focal mechanisms and magnitudes are regarded as doublets. Felzer et al. (2004) in their study state "all clustered earthquakes that are within 0.4 magnitude units of each other are classified as doublets". Using that cut-off the recent Iran–Turkey earthquakes are a doublet, rather than foreshock-mainshock and should not be reported as such. Mikenorton (talk) 23:43, 24 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wikilinks in death toll and magnitude sections edit

Does it make sense to include links in by death toll and by magnitude sections? Like this:

By death toll edit

Rank Death toll Magnitude Location MMI Depth (km) Date Wikilink
1 41 6.7   Turkey, Elazığ IX (Violent) 10.0 January 24 2019–20 Puerto Rico earthquakes
2 10 5.8   Iran, West Azerbaijan VII (Very strong) 10.0 February 23 2020 Iran–Turkey earthquakes

Listed are earthquakes with at least 10 dead.

By magnitude edit

Rank Magnitude Death toll Location MMI Depth (km) Date Wikilink
1 7.7 0   Jamaica, Hanover offshore VI (Strong) 14.9 January 28 2020 Caribbean earthquake
2 7.5 0   Russia, Kuril Islands offshore V (Moderate) 56.7 March 25 2020 Kuril Islands earthquake
3 7.0 0   Russia, Kuril Islands offshore VI (Strong) 144.0 February 13 -

Listed are earthquakes with at least 7.0 magnitude.

Sometimes the link is included in the location but not really visible plus doesn't make sense. to click on location to find the quake link. Thanks for feedbacks. Wykx (talk) 22:50, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

June 23, 2020 Mexico earthquake. edit

2020 Shumagin Earthquake edit

The earthquake that occurred south of the Alaska Peninsula should have a page dedicated to itself. It is the largest earthquake in the world so far and did cause some damage in Alaska. It ruptured the lower section of the Shumagin Gap of the Aleutian Subduction Zone. It is necessary that this earthquake have its own page, for this reason. Obviously, more research must be done into this earthquake, as it is incredibly under-researched, as evidenced by the lack of information in Wikipedia about it. Fixing the table edit

Number of earthquakes worldwide for 2010–2020[1][2]
Magnitude 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020
8.0–9.9 1 1 2 2 1 1 0 1 1 1 0
7.0–7.9 23 19 14 17 11 18 16 6 16 9 7
6.0–6.9 151 187 117 123 143 127 131 104 118 135 74
5.0–5.9 2,220 2,486 1,546 1,460 1,580 1,413 1,550 1,447 1,671 1,484 875
4.0–4.9 10,138 13,129 10,955 11,877 15,817 13,777 13,700 11,544 12,782 11,897 7,964
Total 12,536 15,822 12,635 13,480 17,552 15,336 15,397 13,102 14,589 13,530 8,921

This is an updated table that is more accurate than the one on the article. However, I did discover that 2010, 2012, 2013, 2018 & 2019 don't match up, as the Total on the website doesn't match up with individual magnitude ranges. Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).

I just checked the individual figures for 2010 and the total and they all check out with the numbers given in the USGS catalog search. It's probably something that we just have to live with. Mikenorton (talk) 19:30, 27 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
