Is probably impossible to set definite criteria for "prominent" but here an approach:

The square should be significant beyond the limits of the city, for example for its:
- artistic significance, i.e. Piazza del Campo, Siena
- historic significance (place of demonstrations, revolutions, etc.) i.e.Tian'anmen Square, University Square, Bucharest
- economic or representative significance, (place for regional markets, location of state institutions).
- touristic destination, i.e. Piazza del Duomo, Milan
The square should be assessed as significant or often quoted in:
- academic journals of urban sociology, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture or other;
- history publications (other than local history);

In the same time there should be excluded from the list city squares of only local significance, such as neighborhood squares. Elekhh (talk) 06:25, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Presumably squares should be located in cities too, rather than towns, despite the fact the Wikilink links to Town square? There are several towns listed at the moment! Also, in reference to significance (above), it would seem anything that is redlinked cannot be all that significant or notable. Sionk (talk) 18:46, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

A large number of different formats have developed since the article was created in 2006. The original format of the article seemed to be

Somewhere Else, Another Place, St Elsewhere - Prague

As opposed to the alternative style which has crept in e.g.

Somewhere Else - Prague
Another Place - Prague
St Elsewhere - Prague

i.e. the original style was space saving, no need for a separate line for each square, even if there are a number of notable squares in the same city.
In my view it would be better to make the list style consistent. Any preferences for one style or the other? Sionk (talk) 21:24, 18 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
