July 6, 2020 revisions edit

Because of the large number of changes necessitated by the update to the Check-list of North and Middle American Birds which the American Ornithological Society published on June 30, 2020, the revisions to this article are presented here rather than in a long series of edit summaries. Changes are per the AOS unless otherwise noted.

  • Revise the references, counts, and text in the introduction.
  • Add 2 species per Lepage and 1 per eBird.
  • Delete 2 species per Lepage and 1 per AOS.
  • Revise tags per Lepage.
  • Revise 1 genus and 1 specific epithet.
  • Revise multiple families' common names per Clements.
  • Revise the sequence of species in family Phasiannidae (Pheasants, grouse, and allies).
  • Revise the sequence of species in genus Selasphorus (Hummingbirds).
  • Revise the sequence of species in family Rallidae (Rails, gallinules, and coots).
  • Revise the sequence of families in order Suliformes.
  • Revise the sequence of species in family Phalacrocoracidae (Cormorants and shags).
  • Revise the sequence of species in family Cathartidae (New World vultures).

January 1, 2021 revision edit

I restored the following documented statements because I believe they are relevant and interesting to a reader:

  • For mountain quail, "(introduced to Vancouver Island per Birds of the World, but native according to the IUCN)"
  • For California quail, "(Introduced to Vancouver Island; resident in eastern British Columbia)"
  • For greater prairie-chicken, expanded the note to match that in List of birds of the United States.
  • For all three of them, I have moved the IUCN citation to follow the Cornell one so their sequence is the same as that of the text.
  • I have also restored the (A) tag to American flamingo without the IUCN counterpoint, as IUCN does now agree that it is a vagrant in Canada.

    • I think the "introduced to Vancouver Island" part is useless for the California quail. There is no need to state that, since it is already native to another area of Canada. If this were a list of just birds of Vancouver, then it would be acceptable. But it isn't, it's just pointless. Ddum5347 (talk) 02:04, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
      • I think it is worthwhile to keep craigthebirder's statement of Vancouver Island introduction. The island is sufficiently separated from the mainland and important enough to say so... pvmoutside...

February 24, 2021 revision edit

This revision made the following changes:

  • Revised the status of Labrador duck in the intro; sources agree that its nesting area is unknown (no dispute).
  • Revised the notes to mountain quail, California quail, and greater prairie-chicken according to Cornell's Birds of the World. Deleted the IUCN statements because the weight of evidence is that IUCN is not a reliable source of range data (see Wikiproject Birds).
  • Expanded the note for house finch.
  • Moved those parenthical comments and others to a Notes section.
  • Made a few families present in two columns.
