Talk:List of Western Australia tropical cyclones

New list! edit

Wow, cool article!!! Glad this one is up and running. The next thing to do is update it by adding Cyclone George, and Cyclone Clare and Glenda to the list. :) RaNdOm26 13:45, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cyclone JOAN has been taken out of this list.

Which is mystifying as it is on record as one of the most devastating cyclones to hit the WA coast in its recorded history. Not to mention the other cyclones that occurred between 1973-1978 when I lived in the North West of Western Australia.

Furthermore, JOAN has its own Wikipedia page the disaster it created was of such intensity. In Port Hedland, most of the structures were damaged as a result of the storm. In addition, 1,000 homes in the town were damaged or destroyed.

JOAN is listed in Wikipedia as one of 'the most intense tropical cyclones Australian region'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_most_intense_tropical_cyclones#Australian_region

"excess of 90 km/h for about 10 hours, radar imagery suggested that the most destructive winds were in the range of 25 to 40 km of the centre, implying that Port Hedland winds were somewhat less than the maximum generated by Joan. The maximum wind gust was estimated to be about 250 to 260 km/h. The radius of gales was about 170 km."

There is a stack of incorrect information in this article... edit

Numerous notable names are missing (i.e. Vance); and Cyclone John 1999 has a statement something along the lines of (strongest ever to that date), which is utterly false; it was a Category 3...John.Gavirulax 15:28, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Emergency Management Australia database entry on Cyclone John states:

The Pilbara towns of Karratha and Roebourne were spared the full fury of Cyclone John on Wednesday 15 December when Australia's strongest cyclone to date (with winds gusting to 290 km/h) to cross the coast veered east and crossed in an isolated location about 100km away.

Not sure if this deep link will work; if not, I'm sure you're capable of finding it yourself. Hesperian 00:30, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, in this case we appear to have two conflicting Government organisations. [1]

My above statement about it being Category 3 is incorrect. However, I highly doubt it's the strongest in Australia to that date, as Cyclone Thelma and Cyclone Vance both has winds equal, or above it. I tried searching up details of news reports, and all I found was "Cyclone John is as strong as Cyclones get, with 290km/h winds" (which alone is wrong as Monica had 360km/h, though that was of course after). But Cyclone Thelma has winds gusting to 320 km/h just a year before it.Gavirulax 03:08, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

It is evident from other entries in that database that the summaries provided by the EMA are excerpts from news reports, rather than their own words. Possibly they have misquoted a report, or quoted out of context. Perhaps what was meant was that it was Australia's strongest cyclone to date for that season.
This is your area of specialty, not mine, so feel free to do what you think best in reconciling the two sources.

Thanks. I'll try to find some reliable sources (mostly BoM and JTWC to get this information from). Sorry if I came across as a jerk in my initial reply. :) Gavirulax 07:15, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

No need to apologise. I try to find good, reliable sources for my articles, but there are plenty of people who don't. You can be forgiven for thinking the list is crap based on the evidence before you ;-) Hesperian 07:27, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Added brief remarks for cyclone Damien, sourced from BOM & ABC. Lived through that one!Hank Stamper (talk) 06:58, 6 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
