Central America and Southeast Asia/Oceania

edit

For Central American events, shall those be included in the North America list? I say make the cut off at the main South American landmass (not the equator). Perhaps break the North American list off to US, Canada, and Mexico/Central America/Caribbean?

As for parts of Southeast Asia and for Oceania, should we include all in the list even though in some cases events are north of the equator? For such events, at least for southeast Asia, if the events are listed with Oceania/Southeast Asia, should said events also be listed with Asia? Should no events from Southeast Asia be included, and if so, what is the differentation from Oceania?

It wouldn't surprise me that eventually each subregion in the southern hemisphere will warrant its own page. Evolauxia 10:49, 5 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sirlinksalot Tornado Links has a large collection of links to various tornadoes sites, and if you go to "News Articles about Tornadoes" has links to many, many news articles about tornado events around the globe. Evolauxia 22:28, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Will be adding many tornadoes to the Australian list, which is definitely incomplete

edit

I've noticed that the Aussie tornadoes list is lacking in information. There have been SO many more tornado sightings (I get my information from Australia Severe Weather) and the tornadoes already here are lacking information (that IS available online) and the links also need tidying up. I'll be doing this as soon as I can. Stay tuned! (Incandescent (talk) 04:04, 13 March 2008 (UTC))Reply

  • Thanks, I'm aware it's lacking and welcome additions to make it more complete. We don't list every tornado, we tend to stick to the more notable events, which is necessarily arbitrary. I know Australia has a decent number of tornadoes, including at least occasionally strong ones. There does seem to be less tornadoes than one would expect from the supercell activity, and this doesn't seem to be just a population density or reporting network issue per Aussie storm chasers like the ones that maintain that site. Add whatever notable events you like, understanding it's not meant to be an exhaustive list of every tornado known in Australia. If you wanted to do that, you could create a separate article solely on tornadoes in Australia. Also, on the list articles, we just put the very basic info and the details go into separate event articles, if warranted. If you wanted to go into more detail on specific events without creating separate articles for each one, the best way to do that would be to create sections on the events in an Australia article. The objective is to keep the list itself as a concise, easy reference. I'll assist as much as I can; we welcome all the help we can get and don't worry if I come off as expecting all these things; it won't be a problem. Just add your info, and if need be, we'll fix it so it fits the guidelines of the severe weather wikiproject. The only real requirement is that all additions must be verifiable; that is, sourced. The site you mentioned is reliable enough. 11:33, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
    • No problems at all! Yes, I realised that not all tornadoes were listed, and that only 'important' ones were. What I've done is I've added one tornado that I felt was significant, and I edited quite a lot of the other ones already listed there, and adding links where appropriate because I thought some needed references. I'm not sure if there needs to be a separate page on Australian tornadoes and I'm not sure how to create one, either. (Incandescent (talk) 02:55, 17 March 2008 (UTC))Reply

Townsville, Australia Tornado

edit

There was a tornado in Townsville, Australia, a city of approximately 150,000 just before sunrise on March 20 2012. It travelled in a north to south direction for about 5 kilometres. It passed very close to the official meteorological station at the airport which recorded a very short duration high amplitude pressure dip. There was major structual and tree damage in the suburb of Vincent. It has been unofficially estimated at F1/F2 strength. Here is a link to the local newspaper's story: http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2012/03/20/315531_news.html and this is a link to an Australian weather forum discussing the event: http://forum.weatherzone.com.au/ubbthreads.php/topics/1093867/1. This event was one of the most significant in Australian tornado history and should definitely be on the list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.167.157.158 (talk) 12:39, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Then go ahead and add it [rolleyes].--Biatch (talk) 09:26, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Time to Split articles off

edit

The Australia section is starting to get awfully long. Anyone object to a Tornadoes in Australia article being created, using the list and a little more information about history and areas with relatively high frequencies. --Biatch (talk) 21:37, 26 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

I came here to propose this... over ten years later. Yea, I'm gonna go ahead and do this. Seeing as South America already has its own list, this list mainly exists for Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. So I'm gonna split off them into three. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:04, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

2013 Hobsonville "Tornado"

edit

I'm fairly sure I remember hearing that classifying it as a tornado was in error and it was actually something else? I don't remember the details tho and it coudl be that *this* itself was the incorrect info. But might be worth checking. 101.98.149.41 (talk) 08:12, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Redirecting article

edit

I have redirected the article to Tornado climatology, due to the various continents getting split off. Until earlier today, the only parts left of the article that were unique to this article were Australia and New Zealand, but seeing as they both have enough content on their own, I split both of them off. That made this page redundant, so I have boldly redirected this. As such, this article needs to have its edit history retained, seeing as it's been around since 2006, and it's the basis for the four lists that were split off. I just wanted to write my thoughts on the talk page, in case anyone has issue with it, but I don't believe there should be any controversy, seeing as this page has served its purpose up until now. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:45, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
