Minor changes

On the subject of Soujiro's wanderings, Soujiro leaves the Juppongatana, effectively marking the end of the syndicate, and begins his wanderings prior to Shishio's defeat (if you could call it that,) at the hands of Kenshin and Shishio remarks on this much prior to his battle with Kenshin.

Could someone who has access to the original japanese manga add the kanji for the names? I assume Tsukioka has the same surname as Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, but I could be wrong. --YoshoKatana 02:21, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Geisha vs Oiran

Yumi, a geisha? No way! Geisha are not prostitutes! If Yumi were a geisha, her bow would be on the back. Only a prostitute (high rank or not) would wear her bow on the front. Saito

Saito didn't master all the sword techniques of the Shinsengumi-Kenzyutu and therefore, shouldn't be able to teach the techniques of the Shinsengumi-Kenzyutu to others without supervision. It's safer to assume that in the Meiji era, Saito couldn't teach his Gatotsu (fictional techniques of the Shinsengumi-Kenzyutu) to others in the RK universe (since he would not have the proper supervision to do so.) Yutaro's Right Arm

Later in the anime, Yutarou's right arm is fully healed. At the end of the manga, Yutarou's right arm is healed (not 100% though) and he becomes an assistant instructor (like Yahiko) at the Kamiya Dojo.

There's no indication that he ever becomes left-handed in the anime or in the manga.

Enishi and Shishio

The Enishi and Shishio entries are rather long... should they be made into seperate pages. Enishi is the major villain of the Jinchu/Memory arc with a very long and developed backstory while Shishio is the major villain of the Kyoto arc.

Misao on Template

I think that Misao is a distinguishable enough character in the series to be put on the template.

Message to an anonymous user regarding Udō Jin-e

Udō Jin-e is not the only character that has a decided advantage over Kenshin (in his wanderer personna). In addition, Kaoru isn't saved by Kenshin. She overcomes the Shin no Ippō by herself.

Saito, for example, is another character that has such a deiced advantage over Kenshin.

Saito Hajime

Does anyone else think he deserves a seperate article? Aoshi has his own article and Saito is no less important than Aoshi.

As far as I know, articles for characters based on historical figures are not created separately. There's a Saito Hajime article with a "Saito in fiction" section and the RK version of Saito is included there. Seven 23:45, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

I feel we should make a seperate article(Which I did, but was deleted) as Saito here has perhaps too much information for a minor character, and even has a list of his own techniques. Besides, Saito probably done as much as Aoshi and perhaps more. Please check the guidelines. I honestly don't believe that articles for characters that were real people should be created separately. I placed some edits on their profiles based on what I read from the manga's Remembrance Arc and TsuiokuHen, but they were reverted due to lack of sourcing and "speculation", which I still don't quite comprehend. Fair use images and this article

This article has been tagged at least as early as September of 2009 [1] as containing an excessive amount of non-free imagery. It currently holds 20 such images. Anyone interested in this article should work to reduce the number of images, preferably to single digits, even less than five. • If this were just a slavish addition of images for every character, I would have just stripped them a long time ago (examples [2][3]). I agree that the caption text does offer some improvement to the situation, but it's not a viable solution. The use is still considerably excessive. WP:NFLISTS applies in spades. This article is a special case. The reason why there are 20-something images is because the amount of detail in regards to the character design merits as few images as possible to portray all of the described characters (those that appear in "The Secret Life of Characters" only, and those that do not have individual articles). If a character's design conception (what the character is based off of, how the creator decided to make the character's appearance) is there, logically. It is unusual for the author to the describing so many of his characters in this detail, especially in regards to many minor characters.

There is one way that I will agree to a reduction of images. I would be glad to "consolidate" characters into images (i.e. I found one of Iruka and Konohamaru, killing two birds with one stone). "agree that the caption text does offer some improvement to the situation" - The caption text is just a part of it. The actual descriptions in the said sections have even more information.

I am well-acquainted with Wikipedia:NFLISTS, and "consolidation" is a good way to make this further in compliance with NFLISTS.

If someone can help me find, say, Tae and Tsubame (done) in one image, or, say, the Su-shin and Heishin (done) in one picture, or Raijuta and Yutaro (done) in one, I will be glad to help.

An alternate idea would be to give some characters their own articles. This list is becoming very long, and it may make sense to give characters with a lot of description their own articles.

I already told you once that the list needed to be trimmed with some minor characters removed (some of them barely appear in the series). Characters may have a lot of comments from the author in the article, they do not have comments from third party sources that would help them pass notabiltiy requirements.Tintor2 (talk) 19:07, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Creation/conception details by definition come from primary sources. "Reception" (how people react to characters) originates from third party sources. Which other discussions/guidelines say that usage of NONFREE images are preferred to be/ought to be based off of secondary rather than primary sources?

None of the characters with images should be exclusively from the anime. Watsuki's "Secret Life" details are only written about characters in the manga. "When I joined to wikipedia and worked in some of the main characters articles," Watsuki wrote in detail about many minor characters. Some of them appear solely within one or two plot arcs. Some are recurring. Watsuki did describe one-shot character Raikoji Chizuru in a page, but nobody else other than her. If we are to determine which characters have little impact to the plot (those with images), we should determine which ones they are. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:16, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Ah, I see. The characters who would be most likely to have articles split would be more "major" characters and those who appear in all of or multiple mediums

In regards to the question: "which should be listed?" - The Japanese Rurouni Kenshin link below lists many minor characters and has descriptions. Perhaps, in regards to the manga, characters who are not listed in that Japanese EL and characters who are not given the "Secret Life" treatment could be removed.

I notice the Japanese Wikipedia groups all of the "Shishio's faction" characters in one article: ja:志々雄一派 - Could we do this on the English Wikipedia too? Also the number of nonfrees is down to 17, as I "consolidated" three groups of characters into a combined total of three images.

Of the remaining images:

1 is an image of the main characters - all of the pictured characters have their own articles. The image is intended to be a "summary" of the main characters in the series

Kenshin, Kaoru, Yahiko, Sanosuke, Saito, Aoshi, and Misao are in the image

7 images are each of one character, each with a "Secret Life" profile

Udo Jin-e, Takeda Kanryu, Himura Kenji, Akamatsu Arundo, Senkaku (he is not in the "Shishio's group" image), Ōkubo Toshimichi, and Sagara Sōzō each have individual images

2 images are groupings of two or more characters that, within each grouping, share the same profile in a given "Secret Life"

Hiruma Brothers, Higashidani Family (Kamishimoemon, Uki, Ota)

6 images are groupings of two or more characters with distinct profiles in "Secret Life"s

Raijuta and Yutaro, Shishio's group (12 characters), Five of the "six comrades", Woo Heishin and the Su-shin, Tae and Tsubame, and the Tokyo Oniwabanshu (4 characters)

1 image is of a grouping of characters, but only one character in the group is profiled in a "Secret Life"

Okina has a "Secret Life" - Shiro, Okon, Omasu, and Kuro do not have "Secret Life" profiles

The only images I see can are legitimate per the WP:NFCC are the four group images. The individual character images, however, does not meant the "Minimal usage" criteria of WP:NFCC, even if the captions may include creator cometary. Minimal usage as per NFCC refers to "Multiple items of non-free content are not used if one item can convey equivalent significant information." - And in the consolidating of photos I have done that (the group images of Shishio's faction, the five of the six comrades, etc. are a result of this clause). By simply removing every image that has two or one characters, the characters of the removed photos are not conveyed at all. Based on my understanding of the text, the "minimal usage" phrase explicitly refers to consolidation of images and not simply "using as few nonfree images as possible in an article."

WP:NFCC says "non-free images should be used judiciously to present the key visual aspects of the topic. It is inadvisable to provide a non-free image for each entry in such an article or section" - So there should be care in determining which and how many non-free images there are, and not every entry/section needs a nonfree image. This may have been what you meant to refer to. In my view, the number of nonfree images permissible or kept needs to be determined on an article by article basis, based on specifically what the article has.

In regards to "significantly increase readers' understanding" - This one could be used as a reference to determine which images go and which stay. In your opinion, which images do not "significantly" increase the understanding, and which ones do? I would like for you to read through the article and determine which images, in your opinion, do not significantly increase your understanding of the character in relation to the creation and conception information.

• File:TaeTsubameRK.png - These images are just 2 characters with no real commentary as to why they need to be depicted. Being a major character is not a free pass to have an image on Wikipedia. At most that would extend to the main protagonist(s) and even then you still have to have some kind of fair use rationale.
• File:OniwabanshuTokyo.jpg
• File:FourofSixComrades.PNG - slightly better than the above as they use more characters. Normally these wouldn't be a problem, but this page uses too many and it seems the focus is on the artist's creation concept which the image doesn't help illustrate.
• File:AkamatsuArundo.png
• File:SenkakuRuroKen.jpg - only minimal amount of creation info to justify them and they are both indivisual images in a character list with way over an article's reasonable number.陣内_Jinnai 02:56, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

• In regards to Tsubame, the author talked about how he had decided to give Tsubame a bowl cut after watching a TV show and deciding that she was either going to have pigtails or a bowl cut since she was supposed to be an "average" girl. Do you believe that this is not enough to justify a nonfree image? With Tae there is the lack of lipstick, the decision to use "black" (even though the image shown has her hair colored brown, in a comic book it would appear black) and how he had changed the rejected Kenshin model to have a softer female face. You can link to a bowl cut and the user can get a good idea if they don't know already what one looks like. Doesn't matter whether its male or female as its the same cut. Similar arguments hold true for the rest. The major reason for showing the artwork is to show the stylization which isn't always easy to describe to readers. Once you have a few images of what the characters look like, the reader can use his immagination to fill in the gaps reasonably well unless there is something special about one of the characters. For all their origins, most of the characters end up having similar features and thus there is no need for so many pictures.陣内_Jinnai 19:16, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Ah, I see. I had the impression that using a nonfree to illustrate a creation/conception process would be enough of a fair use rationale. It seems like there needs to be a higher threshold for one. Sailor Moon and Tsubame?

Does Watsuki go into any more detail about the Sailor Moon inspiration for Sanjō Tsubame's character design? Currently on Sailor Saturn it's asserted that Tsubame was designed after Hotaru, but the citation here isn't explicit enough to port over to Sailor Saturn. From what I read in the character design section, Watsuki does not specify which character Tsubame's design comes from - There may be more information in the Rurouni Kenshin Profiles work or in official works that have not been translated from Japanese. In addition the Brazilian Editora JBC editions may provide additional information added by the Brazilian editors.

I would also suggest stopping by the ja:Wikipedia:Chatsubo and ask Japanese people to look up Japanese sources to see if any secondary or primary sources fingered a particular character.

These names = place names in Niigata

Because Watsuki grew up in Nagaoka, Niigata (including former Koshiji, Niigata), he named these characters after the real places in Niigata. Those that don't have any proper reception should be merged. It's as simple as that. You may want to try finding Japanese coverage for characters though. Narutolovehinata5 ^tccsdnew 07:35, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Enishi and Makoto strike me as ones that should have reception, being the two primary antagonists (Makoto especially considering the live action version). Tomoe again strikes me as someone that should be notable given her role in a notable two part OVA. Some of the others also strike me as borderline but I think those are the 3 priority characters to concentrate on. In this case, I think it's acceptable to leave the articles as they are for a few weeks while research is carried out, and then perform merges after that time. It's not like there is a shortage of critical commentary on the series and its characters. SephyTheThird (talk) 08:56, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
