Article Purpose

edit

Hari. Can someone please make it clear to me what the purpose of this article is? I would imagine it is supposed to be a central 'hub' for Wikipedia articles on ISKCON devotees, however I note there is currently devotee in the list who doesn't have a page. Is this page for Wikified Devotees, or all Devotees?

Wouldn't it make more sense for this to be a category?

Also, if the article is going to stay like this, I can understand why we have a short piece of information about the devotee, but in my opinion the offical site links should be removed and kept on the devotee's wikipedia page. Dwayne Kirkwood 22:18, 28 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree, this page is pointless. Also the title should read "ISKCON Devotee Profiles" for it to be correct english. Sfacets 00:41, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I don't agree and I moved the article, to illustrate why I think it can be useful. It doesn't merely list these people. It also shows what part they have in the organizational structure of the organization. So it adds to the alphabetical organization of the category. - Mgm|(talk) 12:27, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yup, you have a point - good work... Sfacets 12:53, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, on the topic of my other two main points. Are we going to list all of the thousands of devotees in ISKCON, or just the ones who have wiki pages? Because right now we have a few entries that don't have pages. And is there any point to having the little captions? Dwayne Kirkwood 16:09, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

To be honest - I have my doubts as to the purpose of this page and how it fits in with Wikipedia's policies. If a lot of work goes into it and then the page is just removed it would be a shame. Are there any other pages of this type for other organisations? GourangaUK 18:40, 19 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Not as far as I can see. ISKCON is a huge society, and if we are going to add every devotee, the list will get very long and pointless immediately. Otherwise it's just a list of 'notable' devotees, in which case the article be called "List of Notable ISKCON devotees by status". Dwayne Kirkwood 23:17, 26 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
In a way it should be a category, I am not sure where the sources of such a list would be otherwise. Wikidas© 09:11, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

George

edit

"George Harrison, popular English guitarist, singer, songwriter, record producer, and film producer, best known as a member of The Beatles who passed away chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra in the company of monks from ISKCON"

I find this highly dubious - as he was dying of cancer at the time. Are there any references of this? Sfacets 01:15, 1 March 2007 (UTC) I find this: http://www.salagram.net/GH.html

As I understand it Mukunda Goswami and other devotees were with George when he left his body: "According to Shankar, George positioned two pictures of Hindu gods Krishna and Rama around his bed, and he chanted the Krishna mantra. Two more of George’s close friends from the Krishna faith, Shayam Sundara and Mukunda, were there chanting quietly into their meditation beads, while George passed away at 1:20pm on the 29th of November, 2001." [1] [2]. Still, the way the description is given needs to be fixed - from the references it does not sound like anyone knows for sure if George was chanting himself (i.e. in his mind) as he died.
