Illustrations edit

There are some excellent pictures, but the one with this caption has such a peripheral relationship to cricket that I think it would be better omitted: March of the Guards to Finchley. The 1745 Jacobite rebellion had little if any impact on London cricket in the days of "Long Robin" and single wicket. JH (talk page) 15:27, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just wanted to put something into a period that will otherwise make for a wide gap between images. I could do with a caricature of Colchin if only someone could do one. Do you think a change of caption would help or shall I take it out? I don't mind. BlackJack | talk page 20:00, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Personally I would take it out. I'm also dubious about the Queen Elizabeth one. You seem to have quite a reasonable number of illustrations, so I don't think that you need to "stretch" like that. (A possible substitute it, with greater relevance, might be a picture of the Royal Grammar School, Guildford. There's a suitable picture in the Wiki article. It would need to have quite a lengthy explanatory caption, of course, (or an explanation in the text) which is a slight snag.) JH (talk page) 20:12, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. The school photo is very apt. Thanks for that. I'm going to add it to the early history article too. A pity about Queen Elizabeth as she looks very attractive in that portrait! BlackJack | talk page 08:10, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

A question of dates edit

The year given for the John Derrick entry is 1597. It's true that that was the year in the Julian Calendar (Old Style or OS) in use at the time, but in the Gregorian Calendar (New Style or NS) we now use it fell in 1598. I would be inclined to use 1598, but if not then there should at least be an explanatory footnote (as is done in Derrick's own article). Fortunately the problem only arises with dates in the early months of the year (prior to the Quarter Day on 25th March, I think, which I believe was taken as New Year's Day), so shouldn't be a problem for most of the other pre-1752 entries, where the event referred will generally have taken place during the cricket season. I agree. Who are you? :-) ----Jack | talk page 19:06, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

People who played cricket as opposed to cricketers edit

There seem to be quite a lot of entries, particularly in the first table of this, where the people involved aren't cricketers as such but people who are known to have played cricket. I'm thinking about those involved in various trials and so on mainly. I'd suggest going through and removing those who fall under the "people who played cricket" category, unless anyone objects massively. Thanks. I'll think about actioning this as no one has objected. Not quite sure, but I imagine a summary section will be useful. Lots of the detail is covered elsewhere anyway. Blue Square Thing (talk) 09:09, 26 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Begun to do this. It might want changing or even reverting. Blue Square Thing (talk) 08:11, 31 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Splitting list edit

Having worked on the list from 1787 to 1825 and just about got that sorted - bar checking - I'm inclined to split this list and create a List of English cricketers 1772 to 1786. This will give us definite inclusion criteria as we can use first-class status. This list can stay until 1771 and there will be lots of cross-referencing, but it means that we can get an alphabetical list in the same style as for 1787- which is much easier to use. There will be plenty which can just be copied across anyway. Objections? Or better ideas? Blue Square Thing (talk) 09:09, 26 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

I'm going to go ahead and do this boldly and we'll see what happens. It can always be undone if necessary. Blue Square Thing (talk) 07:50, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
This is done and has been gone through and verified. Blue Square Thing (talk) 08:11, 31 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Noting that this discussion exists, should anyone want to reconsider the splitting of the article. Blue Square Thing (talk) 14:50, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
