Talk:List of Book of Mormon translations

Tamil edit

Does anyone have a reference for the full translation of the BoM into Tamil? I have been unable to find any. I've seen the date often given as 2005, like in this table from Paul Gutjahr's The Book of Mormon: A Biography, which I've seen copied elsewhere on the web. And the page on Cumorah.com for Sri Lanka ambiguously says "The Book of Mormon is translated into Sinhalese and Tamil," without specifying whether it was selections or a full translation.

The best source I can find is the February 2005 Ensign, which lists the new Tamil translation as only selections. (Cumorah.com echoes this.) Selections had also been published in 1982, so perhaps this was a revision or replacement of those selections?

Here's a link to the BoM Tamil translation, if anyone is able to read it and tell whether it is a full translation or selections. ——Rich jj (talk) 13:29, 13 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have compared my Tamil translation by books and ending chapters and verses of the English and other translations and each are the same. Therefore, it appears that the Tamil Book of Mormon published in 2005 is a complete copy of the Book of Mormon. Though I do not speak the language this appears to be the case. Book by book, chapter by chapter and verse by verse all the numbers are the same.CWMcBrayer (talk) 04:46, 25 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Esperanto translation edit

The Book of Mormon has been translated into Esperanto, but this work hasn't received an imprimatur from any of the churches.--86.170.21.102 (talk) 16:14, 14 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Why has the Esperanto edition been deleted from this list? As the poster above points out, it is unofficial, but it does exist because I have an electronic copy of it! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.249.184.209 (talk) 11:59, 2 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

I removed it from the "complete translations" list because I've only seen the "selected chapters" translation. If you have a complete translation I'd love to see it. You can e-mail me from the "e-mail this user" link on the left-hand sidebar from my userpage. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:10, 3 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I just saw that it was complete removed. I added it back. This title of this page is "List of Book of Mormon translations," not "List of Official Book of Mormon translations," so I believe it should stay. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:15, 3 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Esperanto was removed because it is not officially accepted by any branch of the LDS tradition. For example, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, translations must be approved by the First Presidency before becoming official. That has not happened for Esperanto. There is no information anywhere that the Community of Christ has made a similar translation. To claim Esperanto as a "Selections of the Book of Mormon," which is unique to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and must also be approved by the First Presidency, is wrong. I've moved information about Esperanto to the text of the page, but the language cannot be included in the list. Hydrobrain (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 15:05, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
It seems weird to have a sentence just for Esperanto in the lead. What about a section on unofficial translations? For example, I'm not sure if the 2015 Hebrew translation of the BoM is official in any church--it was independently published.Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:07, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've been doing more research on the Esperanto BoM translation. The selected chapters were approved, but not published by the church. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 22:11, 8 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
"Esperanto was removed because it is not officially accepted by any branch of the LDS tradition." - This isn't an argument, sorry. This page is for translations of the BoM, not for whether they have received official approval by some church. We don't do the same on every Bible translation for example or Koran.
There are official groups that maintain certain translations of the Bible. Cambridge University Press maintains it for the King James Version of the Bible, the American and British Bible Societies maintain the Spanish Reina-Velera version, etc. Hydrobrain (talk)
The question here is not whether it is "officially accepted", but if it is complete, and written in competent Esperanto.-86.180.91.151 (talk) 09:38, 25 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
The problem with Esperanto showing up in the lists already provided is that 1) it is not a complete translation, from what I've seen, and 2) it cannot be listed as a "Selections of the Book of Mormon," because that is a specific designation that means something specific: certain chapters are included, and it's accepted and published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Esperanto translation is, at best, an unofficial, partial translation. If we want to include it on this page, it really should be part of a sub-list of unofficial translations, so that we do not imply an official translation that does not exist.Hydrobrain (talk)
According to my source, which you removed, the Esperanto translation was officially approved. Maybe a separate subsection would be better, since whether or not the church published a translation seems to be very important to you (though it is not demanded by the page's title). Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:00, 21 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
I made a separate section for non-LDS translations. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:48, 23 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Quechua edit

Book of Mormon - Quechua

The catalog record for this item says it's a translation of the BoM into the Quecha language from 1980. Is it actually just the selections? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:37, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

There was a Selections translation completed in 1979 for Quechua (Peru) and a Quichua (Ecuador) Selections completed in 1980. Could be either of those Hydrobrain (talk)

Orphaned references in List of Book of Mormon translations edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of Book of Mormon translations's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
