List of the notable Knights of Baltimore City CollegeList of Baltimore City College people — The current name of the article does NOT follow Wikipedia naming conventions, and is not neutral enough for an alumni/attendee/faculty page. —Thx2005 16:19, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Discussion edit

Any additional comments:

Ok, regardless of what the alumni call each other, it's not a neutral enough title to call a page "notable knights". No alumni page, college or high school, has the mascot in the title (there's no "Notable Towson Tigers of Towson University"). Plus the naming conventions don't allow this title anyway. Take it up with an admin, but this page can't stay with this title. Thx2005 13:18, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree, you don't see graduates of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute called "Notable Engineers". Besides, these are JUST City grads anyway :) (I kid, good natured ribbing of my HS' rival!) Wildthing61476 04:01, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

This article has been renamed from List of the notable Knights of Baltimore City College to List of Baltimore City College people as the result of a move request. --Stemonitis 17:13, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Removal of paragraph edit

The majority of alumni articles on Wikipedia do not tell how "notable" the alumni and attendees are, and its unfair to say tons of important people went here.

This only serves as an alumni/attendee page, and that paragraph in the beginning is way too filled with weasel words to be on the page. It's just as bad as calling the page "notable knights".--Thx2005 11:49, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Welcome back Thx, from your last post we thought you were going to have no further inputs for our pamphlet. But to address your concerns: First, there are a number of articles about schools’ alumni that start with an introductory paragraph, such as: List of Old Falconians, List of Melbourne High School alumni, List of New Trier High School alumni, List of notable alumni of the Scotch College, Melbourne, List of famous Old Sydneians, List of former pupils of Westminster School. Second, the paragraph in question makes no reference to “tons” of important people, in fact the paragraph refers to “hundreds of civic, business and poltical leaders”. Which is backed up by the more than 120 notables listed so far. Third, you and I may differ about what weasel words are, but according to the wiki definition, “Weasel words are almost always intended to deceive or draw attention from something the speaker doesn't want emphasized, rather than being the inadvertent result of the speaker's or writer's poor but honest attempt at description.” There is nothing deceptive or dishonest about the paragraph. There is no attempt to draw attention from something the writer does not want emphasized. In fact, just the opposite is true. The paragraph is designed to entice readers and researchers to look closer, to examine if the claims that the paragraph makes are true. Finally, your preoccupation with the use of the word “notable” in connection with the school’s alumni nickname, should probalby be directed to the following sites as well: List of notable Old Harrovians, List of notable Old Boys of The Scots College (Sydney), List of notable Riverview Old Ignatians, List of notable Old Knox Grammarians, List of notable Old Carthusians, List of notable Old Wellingtonians, List of notable Old Gowers, List of notable Old Wykehamists. For these reasons the page should remain as is.Marylandstater 18:54, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

New Table Order edit

The names should be in alphabetical order; and should be the first item/category on the list. I have no problem doing it just want to know what you folks think. The current table is a bit confusing especially to those with no connection to school, and therefore no idea what catagory the notables are in b/c they have no idea who graduated from the school. So my suggestion is:

Alumnae(us)[in alphabetical order], Category, Notability, Year of Graduation.

Also I think the color scheme is a bit confusing, as it is designated for republicans and democrats but to rehash Golem88991's point the page is by nature "not political". Perhaps we could designate colors for the categories (i.e. red for the arts, blue for politics and so on.) Or we could go with no colors at all but the fact that some are with and others without colors makes it confusing. But overall I am impressed with the efforts to improve this page we should be a featured list in no time. Please let me know what you think and whether you approve the suggestions.--Bcc07 19:00, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

To do list edit

Dr. Edgar Berman, surgeon, first to do heart transplant and physician to Hubert Humphrey, needs graduation date. According to a baltimore city schools newsletter he is one of the top ten graduates from city: [[1]] 67knight 11:21, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dr. Isaac Colbert edit

I found this page about Dr. Isaac Colbert:

http://giving.mit.edu/honoring_Ike/about.html

It says he was the senior class vice president in 1964, so it's an inference that he graduated in that class, but not explicit. How are/would we handle it (and possibly more like it)? --WriterThesp77 19:12, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pending edit

The following is a list of persons previously listed in the main article, but placed here because no reference to their attendance at City could be found: their names could not be found in yearbooks from 15 to 22 years after their dates of birth. Any info to contrary will be accepted provided that there is some way to verify it.67knight 19:17, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Part of the problem with this is that the year books are only going to indicate who graduated in most cases because they only include seniors. I would keep individuals on the list if there is evidence they attended city. For example, it clearly indicates on the source for Reisinger that he attended city. References for notability v. references for attendance to City edit

For notable alumni, who do not have wikipedia articles, references for both attendance to City and their notability is required. So I am proposing that references for notability be provided at the end of the "reasoning for notability" and that references for their attendance at city should be provided in the column for "class". For notables that have wikipedia articles, merely a reference for their attendance at city should be provided in the class column. Golem88991 22:36, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I wish you had thought of this two weeks ago. I have put in thirty to forty graduation dates, many are from the Greenbag for that year, but some are from an alumni newsletter and some are from Leonhardt's book. You are talking about a lot of work, at least as far as referencing the years of graduation. 67knight 00:29, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Still, I have no objection, but right now I am on a mission to get the rest of those dates.67knight 01:23, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

A note on Ford edit

While it is true the school records list his name as "Harry Jones Ford", I believe that this was a mistake made by the school that was then duplicated time and again in the school records. However, the man's real name is Henry Jones Ford and the two individuals are actually one in the same. I know this because two articles that appeared in the New York Times indicate that "Henry Jones Ford" was a graduate of City College and that he graduated in 1868. One is his obituary and the other is entitled "Ford answers McSweeney". In the latter article, it mentions that Ford made his comments in response to this particular matter (the actual substance of the matter is trivial) in Baltimore because he was there for his class reunion for the 1868 class of Baltimore City College. In light of these two articles, I am confident that it is merely a flaw in the records of City College that was then propagated in all subsequent material from the school. McKeldin edit

Did McKeldin actually graduate from City? From what I have read it appears that he attended night school, and although the night school was housed at City, that does not make him an alumnus. You can refer to the following biography from the Maryland State Archives 128.252.173.42 21:40, 18 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unless, anyone can present a convincing argument otherwise, I think we should remove McKeldin's name from the list of alumni and any other references to him in the alumni article. I would like to claim him as an alum, but it seems that he did not graduate from City. Also, just to clarify, I left the previous message. I forgot to sign in.
