Luminare
I propose the title for this article should be changed to "Luminaire", with a redirect for the term "lighting fixture". This is because the following organizations have made a determined effort to standardize the term "luminaire": the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), which is the preeminent technical authority for the science of lighting engineering and design; The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) of the United States, especially in its National Electrical Code (NEC) and International Electrical Code (IEC), which are both technical standards of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI); and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Together with luminaire manufacturers, these professional engineering and design societies and code and standards making authorities, have standardized the term "luminaire" to replace the more nebulous term "lighting fixture", because the word "fixture" has so many other connotations and is therefore not uniquely definitive. I believe that "luminaire" is also used by similar professional and technical organizations and manufacturers outside of North America.
I hope no one will attempt to lower the scholarly and technical standards of Wikipedia with appeals for the usage of the "common person". Hopefully, people using Wikipedia can be educated to learn something new and more precise.--204.58.248.33 (talk) 13:46, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Totally agree that the profession has adopted the term Luminare and we should follow suite. Will require a quick explanation that enlightens and satisfies the novice who searches for Light Fixture. --Sponsion (talk) 01:27, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
