Lift chairs can be useful for individuals who have a hard time getting in and out of a chair such as individuals with arthritis, a neuromuscular disease, or knee pain. All lift chairs have a maximum weight capacity. They can be as low as 250 pounds for petite sized chairs up to 700 pounds for extra-wide sized chairs. Using a lift chair that has a lower maximum capacity than one's weight can nullify its warranty.

Types

There are two basic types:

• Three position lift chairs: these chairs feature a sitting position, reclining position, and lift position. Usually, the footrest and back move together and can not be moved independently.
• Infinite position (also called "Zero Gravity") lift chairs: these chairs allow for independent movement of the back and footrest. The chair can go into any position the user wants as there are no preset positions. The chair can lie totally flat and some models can go into the Trendelenburg position, where the feet are higher than the heart.

Some lift chairs can come with massage and heat functions.

Delivery

Usually, lift chairs are delivered from the manufacturer by freight. The package is dropped at the drive and in-home delivery is not included. One must pay extra to have the delivery company deliver the chair into one's home as well as assembly it, if assembly is required. Note that lift chairs usually weigh at least 100 pounds. Take this into consideration when planning delivery.

Lifting cushions

There are also lifting cushions available on the market as an alternative to lift chairs. These are placed on any stable seating surface. A cable connect the seat to an outlet and, when activated, the seat raises to push the sitter out of the chair.

Safety

Lift chairs can pose an entrapment hazard. Most lift chairs include a backup battery in case of power outage.
