The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the debate was PAGE MOVED by Beardo a few days ago. I'm going ahead and delisting it and closing this survey, because it's been nearly five days without comment. If someone comes along later with objections to the move, we can talk about it then. -GTBacchus(talk) 06:13, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Requested move edit

I propose changing the name of this article to the grammatically correct Latino Studies. --evrik 18:21, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment - I made the move, but will leave this flagged as a requested move to see if there are any comments. -- Beardo 12:22, 28 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Disagree Latino Studies is not the same as Chicano Studies. Reason being, Latino Studies serves as an umbrella for distinct types of ethnic studies like Chicano Studies but also Puerto Rican Studies, Dominican American Studies, etc. Subsuming this page into Chicano studies would then push out the other Central American, Latin American and Caribbean Latino Groups that can be included under the pan-ethnic term Latino. Please see the variety of university programs listed on this page. I recommend leaving the page as is but including a link to Chicano Studies as a related field. --February 28, 2008 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.223.191.44 (talk) 00:21, 25 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Also disagree: Notice how no one ever defines what Latino actually means? What does the Latin language have to do with it? What does the Roman Empire (Latins) have to do with it? What does Latin Europe have to do with it? We are just supposed to immediately accept it without any explanation. It seems as if just because a word requires a roll of the tongue, that automatically makes it a valid term without any explanation being necessary.
Chicanos (Mexican-Americans) are U.S. citizens and the United States is not recognized as part of Latin America. Mexican-Americans are NOT Latinos, not Romans, not citizens of Latin America. Dropmeoff (talk) 17:05, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Disagree with the move, Given that Latino Studies is recognized as an academic discipline (about US-resident Latinos), not only in the USA but in many other countries, the name should stay. I agree with the person above who notes that Latino Studies is not the same as Chicano Studies. By the way, the term Latino, preferred by many in the USA in preference over Hispanic, derives from the word Latinoamericano, and as such only has a distant etymological and historical relationship with "Latin". Note, too, that within the field of Latino Studies there is an enormous volume of discussion about terminology and the limitations and exclusions of various options (eg Hispanic vs Latino). The various sources cited at the article end contain excellent overviews about that debate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ulaapstonall (talkcontribs) 00:52, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

References edit

Is there another available source for the information provided in the first sentence of the section "Origins of Latino Studies"? The citation for this sentence sends users to JSTOR, but this website isn't accessible for most people. --Belkauri (talk) 04:35, 6 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
