Dillinger edit

I have to wonder why the most historic thing that ever happened to the LC Sherrif, the escape of Dillinger from the county jail, isn't documented in this article. Gtwfan52 (talk) 03:40, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi. An IP has been adding a big chunk of copy relating to the recent removal from office of the sheriff. Here's my problem with it.

  1. The only sheriff mentioned in this whole article is this one. That is a violation of both WP:WEIGHT and WP:RECENT.
  2. WP:BLP tells us it isn't a sound idea to discuss the negative deeds of a living non notable individual in an article that is not about him. That obviously applies. I suppose there might be an argument that the person in question is notable, but the only coverage I've seen, outside of routine election results (which do not apply to notability per WP:NPOL) and routine discussion of police business are about the one event that led to his removal from office. IMO, he'd fail notability, but you are welcome to go to WP:AfC and try to create a biography of him.
  3. This article is about the sheriff DEPARTMENT, not one individual sheriff. Again WP:WEIGHT and WP:RECENT. If you'd want to take the time to do the work to add a listing of all the elected sheriffs in Lake County, which actually wouldn't be that tough, it would be appropriate to add a reason each one of them left office (with sources, unless it was lost the election).
  4. We simply do not list interim office holders per WP:MOS.

All that having been said, I'm not trying to deny the corruption inherent in Lake County politics. I lived there for 24 years, and I am well aware that it is one of the most corrupt counties in the country. Seen it from both sides--my dad was a labor leader and my maternal grandfather was a Republican politician. I think an article on Political corruption in Lake County, Indiana would most likely be a notable subject. Wanna write it? The IP you are using geolocates to Lake County; I am nowhere near there anymore, but I'd be happy to assist you with technical and style on it if you can do the research.
