I do not agree with the translation of the anthem. How can someone translate something which is national and particular to a country? I remember in the past there was even a private school in Malta, for girls, which tried to make them sing the anthem in English. Let us not repeat history. Or else place "for information only". eh, singing the anthem in English. I get the picture.. I added a note saying that it is written in Maltese. That, together with the "translated.." words, should tell readers which is the original, I think? Srl 17:17, 28 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

4 Issues edit

OK, there are a few issues here as I see it. Srl 17:06, 28 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • #1 - the article is identical to the © DOI page linked at the bottom. That's bad, unless there's permission.

If we retain the old translation this problem would not exist. Maltesedog 14:38, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Agree, can you write or rewrite some text also? Srl 17:22, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
  • #2 - This is the English wikipedia and not the Maltese one. I would expect to see at least a rough, loose, or literal translation if nothing else, or frankly there's no reason to include the Maltese version.

OK provided there's written it is sung in Malta Maltesedog 14:38, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

from national anthem: A national anthem is a generally patriotic musical composition that is formally recognized by a country's government as their state's official national song. I think it is implied here? One could say even though maltese and english are official languages the hymn is sung in maltese only. To me that sets up a tension that doesn't need to be in this article at best or at worst is POV.. I offset the english in italics now, what do you think? Srl 17:22, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
  • #3 - It is kind of a strange translation, a very loose one and it's not in the same line order as the Maltese. It used to be different (click Older and Newer to see some variations) but now it is identical with the one on the DOI page, including the different line order. it's not similar to how it was translated to me when I first learned it. Line three should (I think) say something like "remember that you clothed her in the sweetest light", and line four seems pretty clearly "Give, great God, wisdom to who rules her" and line six ".. unity in the Maltese and peace".

Agree with you to retain the old translation Maltesedog 14:38, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

do you wanat to bring back an old translation or make a new one? Srl 17:22, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • #4 - I do agree that the French version shouldn't be here, nor the Anglaise (sp?) version on the fr: version (which it is), unless it is some sort of special translation which would have to be described her. This is not the French Wikipedia. Ceci n'est pas la Wikipédia en français. (sp???)

Agree this should be removed Maltesedog 14:38, 29 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

I think the old translation was fine. what do you think Maltesedog 12:11, 30 November 2005 (UTC) I'll try and find time to find some further information on it.Reply

I think anything better than what's there would be good. I'll try to rewrite the main article. Srl 17:01, 30 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Apparently the English version was written by a May Butcher.

May Butcher edit

Who is she? Can she claim the translation to be copyright Maltesedog 19:21, 30 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Ok found something about her. She wrote an elementary Maltese Grammar Book in 1950, according to the website of the Akkademja tal-Malti.. so it looks ok.

The sites says that the english version might have been semi-official (which is untrue) during the British Rule. So that's why I wanted to make a clarification that its never sung in English. It also states that we have Tunisian tv in Malta which is untrue. Doesn't look like a reliable source. But May Butcher is an important personality.

nine years ago I assumed you were all just part of Italy. Yay for internet.. Srl 21:06, 30 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
