La vida breve / Jaufre Rudel edit

"La vida breve" is definitely not a work of Jaufre Rudel. All we have of Jaufre are about half a dozen poems (or songs) in Occitan language, one of which ("Lanquan li jorn son lonc en mai"), mentions the "amor de lonh"

"Lanquand li jorn son lonc en mai,
m'es bels douz chans d'auzels de lonh,
e quand me sui partitz de lai,
remembram d'un'amor de lonh:
vauc de talan enbroncs e clis,
si que chans ni flors d'albespis
nom platz plus que l'inverns gelatz."

"La vida breve" is by de Falla (or an novel by Juan Carlos Onetti). The phrase has been used also by others (it probably is based on the Latin saying "vita brevis, ars longa", but Jaufre Rudel has nothing to do woth it. Jaufre became a hero in Romanticism, when people believed his songs to have a biographical background. Which probably wasn't the case at all. (Authors who used the subject: Heinrich Heine, Algernon Swinburne, Ludwig Uhland, Giosuè Carducci, Edmond Rostand.) To put it shortly: Saariaho's opera is based on a text by Amin Maalouf, which is inspired on Romantic writings inspired by Rudel.

I'm guessing whoever wrote La vida breve in this article got it confused with a vida (short biography in Occitan) about the life of Jaufré Rudel. --Folantin (talk) 12:45, 31 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
