Blanking the page edit

On first examination, I observed that some anonymous IP had blanked the page and I immediately reverted the edit as blanking constitutes a violation of Wikipedia's policies. But on reverting the edit, I observed that the page had earlier been vandalized by a blocked user who had been indulging in defamation and libelious accusations of particular communities. Besides, removal of edits made by a blocked user do not constitute vandalism at all(As per Wikipedia:BAN#Enforcement by reverting edits). Hence, I am "undo"ing those edits with due apologies to the reverter. -Ravichandar 04:30, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Konars in Contemporary Tamil Society edit

Konars are land-owning caste in the districts of Tirunelveli and Ramnathapuram. Konars are also called Yadavar, which originates from the word Yadava.

http://tamilnation.co/caste/ramaiah.htm

POV-section - This Section trying to portray some group of people as superior and some group of people as inferior based on their birth. This should be avoided.

Castes found in Tamil Nadu in general and Ramanathapuram district in particular may broadly be grouped into three categories: Brahmins, non-Brahmins and the Scheduled Castes. While the Brahmins are considered the highest in the caste hierarchy, the non-Brahmin castes are considered the middle level castes.

The more visible middle level castes include the land owning castes such as Vellalar, Ahamudayar (Servai), Maravar (Thevar), Kallar, Konar (Yadavar) and the Telegu speaking Naidus; trading castes such as Chettiyar, artisan castes like Kusavar or Kuyavan (Potter), Kotthan (mason), Thachan (carpenter), Kollan (blacksmith), Thattans or Nahai Aasari (goldsmith); and the servicing castes such as Ambattan (barbers) and Vannan (washermen). The more visible castes among the Scheduled Castes in Ramanathapuram district are the Mallars, Parayars and Chakkiliyars.

Konars in Education edit

The Konars or the Yadavas of Tamilnadu had established educational institutions in Madurai district. [1]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yadava_College

Yadava College and E.M.G.Yadava College for women are run by Tamil Aayars (Idayars) in Madurai. Ramasamy Konar is the founder of Yadava College and Gopalakrishna Konar is the founder of E.M.G.Yadava College. Chattanatha Karayalar donated lands and money to these two institutions. - Information supplied by Yogesh Karayalar in http://dbsjeyaraj.com/dbsj/archives/3031 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.155.19.47 (talk) 19:44, 16 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Konars in the Tamil Society 1800 years ago edit

The following is from Chapter IV of the book "The Tamils Eighteen Hundred Years ago" written by V.Kanakasabhai

The Ayar or the Cowherd race was distinct from the other races such as Villavar & Meenavar (the ancient tribes of Tamilakam), Nagas and Kosar. Their name Ayar is derived from the Dravidian word A meaning a cow. They were known as Abhiras in Puranic history. In northern India they are still called Ahirs. In the Tamil land they were also called the Pothuvar or Commons (from the tamil word Pothu meaning Common) apparently because they professed friendship to the Nagas and the Tamils alike. Originally they appear to have had their own petty Kings, in the Chola country, but Karikal-Chola is said to have exterminated their line of Kings (Ref: Pattinap-palai 1. 281)

The Ayar in the Pandyan dominion had a tradition that they came into the Tamil land, along with the founder of Pandyan dynasty, who established the Pandyan kingdom and consider themselves as Tamils and not Aryas although Pandyas claim descent from the Pandus - (Ref: Kalitthokai, stanza 104, II 4 to 6)

Their favorite deity was however their national hero Krishna whose liaison with shepherd girls and feats celebrated in the Mahabharata formed the theme of their festive songs.

They had a peculiar custom among them of selecting husbands for their girls from the victors of a bull-fight.(Ref: Kalitthokai stanzas 101 and 11) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.245.16.100 (talk) 14:28, 3 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Konars and Yadavas edit

Sufficient research has not been undertaken to study the Konar caste; In Southern districts of Tamilnadu they are land-owning unlike their counterparts - Yadavas - elsewhere in India. Konars are an endogamous society, but there are exceptions where they inter-marry with castes such as Vellalar (Pillai) and Telegu speaking Naidus.

In Tamil "Kon" means King. "Ayars" means a cow-herd. In the Tamil literature there is a reference to a lady of Konar community shooing away birds by throwing golden ear-rings at the birds while drying grains representing the richness and the amount of wealth possessed by the people of the Ayar community during the Cankam (Sangam) age. Another possible explanation for the etymology of the word Konar is Kon + Ayar meaning the Kings from the Ayar community.

Old text from the Wikipedia article Konar edit

The Yadavas of Tamil Nadu were originally referred as ‘Ayars’ in Tamil literature but locally called as ‘Idayans’. Even in the government records the community name was referred as ‘Idayans(Konar). Up to the Census 1921, the community name was noted as ‘Idayan’. The Tamil speaking Yadavas were referred as Idayans and the Telugu speaking Yadavas were referred as ‘Gollas’ and as Vaduga Aayars. The name of the community was notified as ‘Yadavas’ in government records as per the Government of Madras G.O.No.5240 Law (General) dt.13 December 1930. In the G. O. it was said that the term ‘Yadava’ shall in future be adopted in place of Golla, Idayan, Gola, Gopi or Goda in all official announcement. Accordingly in the Census 1931 the name of the community was noted as Yadava instead of Idayan. This is the last caste wise census enumerated.

According to Indian mythology, the Konar are descendants of the lord Kannan.

Quality edit

This article is definitely not good enough. There is not enough content here nor is the content referenced. Besides, the list of Yadavas is clear propaganda -Ravichandar 22:40, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merge With Yadava and make a section for Konar edit

Now the caste Konar is recognized as Yadava by the Government of Tamil Nadu, India. This page has lot of misleading information. It has to be rewritten.

The article Konar can be merged into Yadava.

TRIVEDICH (talk) 02:19, 1 June 2012 (UTC)TRIVEDICHReply

@Trivedich, The article Konar can be merged into "Yadava" but not into Yadav. The article Yadav is not well-researched and not well-written. The Konars of Tamilnadu had been petty kings (Kadai Yelu Vallal e.g. Ay kingdom)and also in the contemporary times in 1900 following the Palayakkarar rule of Madurai, Konars had been Zamindars of several villages in Madurai, Ramnathapuram and Tirunelveli districts of Tamilnadu. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.245.16.100 (talk) 15:55, 3 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
