Tripura > Twipra

Some changes to names and links were made by an enthusiast for the ancient Twipra Kingdom. I have corrected the links that needed to point to the modern Indian state of Tripura, but recent changes to the historical section ought to be looked at as well. Andrew Dalby 14:36, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

• Semi-Oppose per WP:Naming conventions (languages): "Borok" = Borok people or Borok language. (Though the usage of Kok, Kog, or Kak is so common that we may want to make this an exception.) In any case it is normally written as two words, or at least hyphenated. But better "Kok Borok" than "Kok Borok language", which would be redundant. "Borok" is the name of the people. Many sources use it. Using the name of a people for their language is productive in English, as in "Baganda language" alongside Luganda, "Arab language" alongside Arabic, etc. It's nearly always an option. — kwami (talk) 08:01, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Despite the name of the people, I haven't seen many (if any) sources for "Borok langauge" though. Your example choice of "Baganda language" is strange since the article is located Luganda, the common English name, and "Baganda language" is not even (as of now) a redirect. Likewise, "Arab language" is not an article title because it's not the common name of the language. —  AjaxSmack  00:21, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, there isn't much published on Borok. The fact that WP does not use a name for a title does not make it "strange", though. Baganda language may not be common, but Arab language gets 9000 hits at GBooks. My point is simply that you can almost always use the demonym and tack on 'language'. It's hard to think of examples, since generally English uses the demonym as the only term for the language. — kwami (talk) 01:08, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Not convinced that the current title Borok langage needs attestation, it seems to me to be an acceptable title just as a natural English construction. The question is, can we find a better one? "Not convinced that Borok langage needs attestation". Why not? If it doesn't appear in any sources, isn't that then original research? And how is "Kokborok (language)" ambiguous? I can't find any evidence of usage of the name for any other language except in one Ethnologue list. —  AjaxSmack  18:05, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

If "Kok" means language then Kokborok (language) is redundant. Naorem Sanajaoba's Manipur, past and present discusses the Borok/Tripuri people at p.13 and 331, and the Tripuri language (now Kokborok) at p.324. It seems clear that the article on the language belongs at Kokborok, with redirects from Borok language and from Tripuri (language). If there are no strong objections to this by this time tomorrow, the discussion should be closed. It's long overdue.LeadSongDog come howl! 22:46, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

In the Bengali alphabet article, Kokborok is mentioned as a language using that alphabet. But this article, though it mentions "Literature", seems to assume that it is written in the Latin alphabet. Whatever the case, there should be some mention here of the writing system used by those publishing literature in Kokborok, both historically and recently. --Rosharuo (talk) 16:13, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
