Kitewing is a brand owned by Kitewing LLC. Kitewing LLC was once Kitewing OY located in Finland. Kitewing LLC is based in New Hampshire, USA.
Kitewing LLC builds hand held wing sails and skate sails. Skate sails can also be hand held wing sails.
The brand Kitewing has become synonymous with any hand held wing sail.
The smallest Kitewing LLC rig is the SK821 which is around 2 square meters. The largest rig is the 6.0 Pro, a 5.8 square meter wing.
Skimbat is an additional brand owned by Kitewing LLC. There is a 4.8 meter traditional hand held wing sail rig branded Skimbat. There is a 3 square meter skate sail which is also a small wing sail branded Skimbat.
Hand held wing sails can be used for sailing on a variety of surfaces. Skis to sail on snow, skates on ice, roller blades on pavement, wheels over hard sand, just about any way you can slide, slither or roll over the surface , the hand held wing sail is an accessory.
The hand held wing is a traction device. The wing is flown by hand. Instead of flying off the surface, the wing is used to pull over the surface.
Hand held wing sailing has been stimulated by inflatable hand held wing sails which can be used on the water to ride foil boards. However the inflatable rigs are not as aerodynamic or stable as the traditional hand held wing sails which rely tube frames and full battens to generate shape.
On hard surfaces the traditional hand held wing sail rigs are a significant performance advantage.
