Prostitute edit

Strange edit calling Kisaeng PROSTITUTEs, when the article isn't even talking about Kisaeng as prostitutes but merely mentions them as entertainers who seldom gave sexual favors.

Move to kisaeng edit

Any support for moving this to kisaeng? -- Visviva 03:24, 17 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

All right, I'll do it. I don't have any real problems with moving it back to gisaeng, but I contend that "kisaeng", like "hangul" and "kimchi", has become an established English spelling. -- Visviva 21:11, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
A quick search in the Merriam-Webster Online dictionary shows that there is an entry for kisaeng in the Merriam-WebsterUnabridged.com . And so this move must be supported.--Endroit 18:03, 2 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Congrats! edit

Very good revision of the Kisaeng article! I'm impressed!

In media edit

There are a number of Korean dramas and movies that feature gisaeng, so there is definitely a call for a section listing those. Right now there is only a reference to Chwihwaseon. 64.172.210.200 23:03, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Problem edit

The title of this article is wrong. The current transliteration of Korean should follow the revised romanization, which will be Gisaeng, not Kisaeng. Please reconsider about changing the title of this article, all formats should follow the current version. Thank you. Amphitere 17:32, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Definition of the character 妓 edit

On the bottom of the page, under notes, it says:

1. ^ Specifically, the first syllable means "entertainer" and the second means "life" or sometimes "person." See Wiktionary entries for 妓 (gi) and 生 (saeng). The term ginyeo (기녀/妓女) is likewise composed of the Sino-Korean elements gi for entertainer and nyeo for woman.

This is incorrect. 妓 is a Chinese character meaning prostitute, not entertainer. The Wiktionary link given also gives the same definition. There is no alternative meaning under Hanja in the page either. Also, 妓女 in Wiktionary links to the Mandarin Chinese word for '(female) prostitute'.125.238.23.58 (talk) 11:16, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Nate/Empas Korean-English dictionary gives 氣生, but the wiktionary entry for 氣 doesn't mean 'entertainer' either. (In fact, I suspect it is referring to 'air plants' like some mosses.) It also has the 妓生 hanja. I don't have access to a decent Chinese dictionary, but is it possible that the meaning of 妓 has changed over time? Asfridhr (talk) 06:49, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Prostitution edit

See related discussion: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Korea#Kisaeng_and_prostitution. Key question is - should this word be mentioned here? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 14:06, 30 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
