Kenny Davern did not rate wooden clarinets above any other type of material. A friend of mine, Phil Brown,of Letchworth, Hertfordshire, England, encountered Kenny Davern at a jazz festival and Kenny sat in with the band that Phil was playing with. The ensuing discussion enlightened Phil to the fact that Kenny preferred non-wooden clarinets. I met him one evening at The Stables, Wavendon ( home of John Dankworth and Cleo Laine). Kenny Davern, that evening was playing a Selmer Student model clarinet made from ebonite. Kenny reckoned that no one could tell the difference whatever material the clarinet was made from. So there is nothing 'wrong' with plastic as long as the instrument is well made. John Pinkerton

Ancestory

Okay, we are presented with a number of problems right now concerning his familial heritage. We have one user saying he is Irish, and one saying he is Italian. The first problem is that neither claim has been referenced in any way, regardless of personal friendships that both users involved in this edit war are claiming. The second problem posed is that the name Davern is indeed Irish, certainly not Italian. I think it may be best to just leave this information out until solid sources can be found to clear up the matter. I'm not saying that neither person involved knew Kenny, but I am saying that anyone can make such claims. Relying on such sources of information is unreliable at best. Please discuss the issue here before making further edits to the article concerning his ancestory, so as to resolve an edit war before it ever begins. (Mind meal 17:19, 14 June 2007 (UTC)).Reply

I am the one who thought "Italian." I was wrong: The reference to Italian ancestry was based on comments from my father, who (I now believe) only knew Kenny's father by reputation; I've been forced to realize that my mother (who was Kenny's mother's closest friend) never made any claim as to the Daverns' ethnicity. Incidentally, the biographer researched this well(Dave W 18 Mar 2011).

Kenny Davern's Irish ancestry

edit

There can be no question that Kenny Davern is of Irish ancestry from his father's side. When I last talked to him a couple of weeks before his death, he even thought about getting an Irish passport (which Ireland grants to people of Irish ancestry), because he was fed up with the current political situation in the USA. In addition, he used his Irish family coat-of-arms on his personal letters (of which I have quite a lot). If in doubt, talk to his widow, Elsa; I am sure she will be glad to clear that matter.

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
