I do not have time to edit-war over this, but your revert[1] has restored the entirely unsubstantiated claim that this hypothesis "originated in the 18th century". Show us the evidence, please. Also, you have restored what in my estimation is obvious editorialising and hand-waving informed not by secondary references but by your own opinions (WP:SYNTH). Cite the opinion of scholars, and explain what your favourite scholar has argued, and I will be happy to leave it in the article as relevant.
