Two outstanding Stampeder quarterbacks – Keith Spaith and Peter Liske will be officially honoured at half-time of the 2002 Stampeder regular season home opener, June 28th as the Stampeders battle the Edmonton Eskimos. ... Spaith led the Stampeders to their first Grey Cup Championship victory in 1948, a 12-7 win over the Ottawa Rough Riders.Pistol Pete set many Stampeder passing records as he was named the CFL's Most Outstanding in 1967. ... Keith Spaith# 48 ... Keith quarterbacked the Stampeders to a 25-1 combined regular season record and the team's first two Grey Cup appearances, winning 12-7 over Ottawa in 1948 and losing 28-15 to Montreal the next season … he completed 11 of 19 passes for 132 yards … punted the ball 16 times … intercepted one pass as he played the entire 60 minutes of the '48 Grey Cup … that victory in '48 capped the last ever unbeaten season in the CFL … 14 wins and a tie … including 12 straight regular season victories. Spaith was named Western all-star and the West's Most Outstanding player in both the 1948 and 1949 season … in 1950 he led the West in punting with an impressive 41.5 yard average … because the official statistics were recorded until 1950 … records of his two finest seasons are unknown. Born April 8, 1923, in Dainuba, California … where he played high school football, basketball and baseball before going on to St Mary's College, in California and then onto the University of Southern California for his final two seasons of college football … drafted by he Los Angeles Rams in 1947 … later played with the Hawaiian Islander Warriors before joining the Stampeders for the 1948 season … served in the United States Navy … playing two years for their football team … returned to the United States when his football playing days were over in Canada where he worked with his two brothers in the construction business until his death in March of 1976 at the age of 52. Father of two sons, Bob who lives with wife Cassie just south of Calgary, near Longview and Doug, now deceased, and daughter Dorothy (Brent) Spaith who resides in Toronto … widow Betty (now Bacon) lives in Sarasota, Florida.
