French songs? edit

The phrase "Lindau also translated numerous French swings into German" is confusing. Should this not read "French songs"? The source cited for this statement merely states "Übersetzer französ." I'm not fluent in German but I'm guessing that this source material does not refer specifically to songs, but rather to French in general. Also, where does the notion of "numerous" come from (even if it be accurate)?

Thanks for your remark. The text has been changed accordingly. LouisAlain (talk) 17:41, 28 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
The German text says französ. Schwänke. Now, what do you call a de:Schwank in English? The German word may well be cognate with "swing". It is not a song, but a droll story, either as prose or as a short comical piece of theatre. Maybe vaudeville is meant here. --Wrongfilter (talk) 18:31, 28 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Thanks for your research Wrongfilter; feel free to modify the recent change I made. I reckon when I created the article, this passage wasn't clear to me. LouisAlain (talk) 20:01, 28 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
I'm not a native speaker of English nor an expert in theatre, so I simply went with "comedies". However, the only concrete reference to a translation that I could find was of The Second Mrs Tanqueray by Arthur Wing Pinero, which is neither French nor a comedy... --Wrongfilter (talk) 20:32, 28 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Since this passage seems to be an invention or at least lacks any reference, I think it's better to mask the whole thing. LouisAlain (talk) 02:33, 1 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
That's not quite what I meant. The ÖBL entry is a reputable reference and states clearly that he was active as a translator. By "direct" I mean an example of a play that he actually translated, but as I only have the internet I'm not terribly surprised that I can't find anything. Still, no objections to the deletion because the sentence felt tacked on anyway, and is not central to the article. --Wrongfilter (talk) 07:42, 1 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
