Articleclass status edit

I feel that there's more to this story, but the article is long enough it doesn't seem correct to call it a stub.--T. Anthony 04:01, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dagnabbit she is in the German Wikipedia. Her obituary was mentioned in the New York Times[1] and All About Jazz[2]. She's listed in Wikipedia:Music encyclopedia topics/26.--T. Anthony 04:05, 20 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Incident with Art Blakey edit

I have read on one of the jazz bulletin boards that Hipp became inebriated thanks to Art Blakey, who after repeatedly buying her drinks, then persuaded her to perform, with disasterous consequences for Hipp. There are bad stories involving Blakey, as those who have read the Tom Perchard biography of Lee Morgan will know, but can the incident with Hipp be corroborated. I've read this in other "jazzpedias" so I don't think the story is apocryphal. I love Blakey's music-but as a person, it appears he left something to be desired - a Miles Davis "light," maybe?. HammerFilmFan (talk) 16:16, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Nationality edit

I think there's quite lot of evidence that she was German. But we have so far found no evidence at all that she was German-American. Even if she was German-American, I think she would still have been German. Did she have to take US citizenship to stay and work in the US? So I don't see there's a reason not to describe her as German. Yes, Wikipedia tends to label people. Do we also have to remove Category:20th-century German musicians? Martinevans123 (talk) 20:01, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for reverting; Wikipedia is a crude tool at times. I'm anti-labelling in general. We don't know what her nationality was / nationalities were. Maybe she had refugee status; maybe she renounced her German citizenship (assuming she had it to renounce) and wanted nothing to do with Germany. We state what we do know: she was born in Germany and lived in the US for a long time. There was a biography in German planned, but I'm not sure if it has been published... answers might be in there... how's your German? EddieHugh (talk) 20:34, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
It's not that good, sorry. But that would be a very good source. I think you have to agree that for the first 30 years of her life she was definitely German. She became famous in the world of jazz as a German. Exactly what happened in the remaining 48 years of her life is less clear. I think most WP:RS sources describe her as German. If you're "anti-labelling in general" you must have tough time at Wikipedia. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:43, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
