JKR was founded in 1990 by Joe Jones, Andrew Knowles and Ian Ritchie, based on the belief that great design helps brands grow. By 2013 JKR had expanded and moved to their current home in Camden Town, transforming the former warehouse of Jim Henson’s Creature Workshop into the Head Quarters of a now global company.[1] After 22 years in London, the agency expanded across the Atlantic in 2012, with Sara Hyman founding JKR New York. This was soon followed by the creation of JKR Singapore in 2013 by Emily Kousah and Katie Ewer and JKR Shanghai in 2015 by Rene Chen and Yolanda Tang. In 2016, JKR acquired Glassick Brands to expand their Singapore offering.

In 2013, Guy Lambert became Global CEO of Jones Knowles Ritchie.[2][3]

Tosh Hall, then Executive Creative Director in New York, together with his partner, Sara Hyman, then Managing Director in New York, were named one of the “50 Most Creative People” by Ad Age Magazine in 2016, after rebranding Budweiser America.[4]

In 2019, Tosh Hall became Global Chief Creative Officer, responsible for all of the agency’s creative and strategic output across North America, Europe and Asia. James Nixon became CEO of Europe and global head of JKR Ventures (the agency’s entrepreneurial investment arm) and Jonny Spindler became Managing Director of JKR London.[5] Michael Baulk, the former leader of AMV BBDO and worldwide chairman of The Mill, also joined JKR as a non-executive chairman in 2019.[6]

JKR welcomed Lisa Smith, formerly ECD at Chobani, as Executive Creative Director in New York in 2019.[7] In 2017, Sean Thomas was promoted to Executive Creative Director in London.[8]

JKR have been awarded numerous accolades over the course of their history. They have won Gold Clio awards for their work on Budweiser, Budweiser America, Budweiser Prohibition and Domino’s, wooden D&AD pencils for Budweiser Prohibition, Domino’s and Kennaland, a Gold Eurobest award for Hippeas and a Gold One Show award for Bud Light.

Dunkin’

JKR repositioned Dunkin’ with a fresh identity system, TOV, social content and in-store experiences; all while landing a significant name change in culture with a national campaign.[1]


Quid Pro Quo Sans

After a photo of the president’s handwritten note went viral, JKR released a note generator and custom typeface, so you create your own note in “a language Trump can understand—his own.”[2]


Burger King Meltdown

Burger King UK wanted to take a stand against plastic by removing all plastic toys from their King Junior meals. JKR responded with 'The Meltdown'; a multi-channel campaign that called on the public to donate their unwanted meal toys to be recycled for good.[3]


Budweiser America

Budweiser appeared on shelves with a new name: America - and captured the attention of the nation.[4]

There are few brands that conjure an image of Americana quite like Budweiser. And Summer 2016 was the most American Summer ever: the build-up to a Presidential Election, human achievement re-defined at the Olympics in Rio, the U.S. National Soccer Team winning the hearts of the nation at the Copa America Centennial. It was a time when our national identity was debated, re-evaluated and celebrated. Ultimately, the America packaging was about making an impossible-to-ignore statement: to literally hold America in your hand?[5]

JKR Ventures edit

JKR Ventures is the agency’s entrepreneurial investment arm.[1] Founded in 2018 by then Managing Director James Nixon, it works with entrepreneurs who are looking to achieve scale and disrupt the market.[2] Out of this came a partnership with Green Park Brands who create, accelerate and operate distributor brands[3]. Ventures has produced award-winning work for disruptive brands including Hippeas Snacks[4], Ugly Water[5] and The Gut Stuff[6].

JKR Foundation edit

Founded in 2016, JKR Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the agency. It reflects JKR’s belief that creativity has the unique ability—and obligation—to drive change.[1] Foundation partners with brands, non-profits and social enterprises to harness creativity for positive impact, producing impactful work for The Diana Award[2], Social Mobility Foundation[3] and Marble (UNICEF)[4].
