Johannes Bretke was prussian (old prussian). So why title of article is written in lithuanian style? If the russian Ivan Ivanov in english books names himself as John Johnson he becames not an englishman, but still remains Ivan Ivanov. --82.135.217.3 12:09, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please read what name he did use to sign the book, it is quite clear readable "Per Jona Bretkuna". And Old Prussian language was quite similar to Lithuanian. Again you should take into account, that at the time this region was quite Lithuanised.--Lokyz 10:05, 29 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Languages of Johannes Bretke-Jonas Bretkunas edit

Excerps from William R. Smalstieg ... although Bretkūnas may have known Lithuanian very well, Victor Falkenhahn, 1941, 210, wrote that the blunders in the elementary grammatical rules of Lithuanian in Bretkūnas' writings show that Lithuanian was not his native language, i.e., a language spoken"at home with his parents and siblings. Falkenhahn, 1941, 216, suggests that Bretkūnas spoke German at home and Old Prussian with relatives on his mother's side. Sabaliauskas, 1986, 71, points out that Bretkūnas was the only representative of Baltic literature who knew all three extant (at his time) Baltic languages, Old Prussian, Lithuanian and Latvian.

Old Prussian was related to early Latvian and Lithuanian language, Old Prussia = West Baltic, Latvian, Lithuanian = East Baltic, yet Old Prussian was significantly different and not mutually understandable, as the Pater Noster in the different languages show.
