I disagree with the speedy deletion. Yes, the article is currently rubbish and too short even to really qualify as a stub. I should have expanded it long ago. But Jon Cleary has written 50 novels selling 8,000,000 copies and his Scobie Malone series, in particular, is very popular in Australia. A quick Google search will show that he is a known and established writer, with three of his books having been made into movies and one of his books, Peter's Pence, won an Edgar Award in 1975. I suggest, therefore, that Jon Cleary is worth of a Wikipedia article. Russell Brown 12:32, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I'm Eric, and an Australian who's just read the Sydney Morning Herald Timelines obit. on Jon Cleary. I noticed something odd in the final par of that story. It mentioned that his wife Joy died recently after Alzheimer's, and that his eldest daughter Jane pre-deceased him with cancer. An eldest daughter implies a younger daughter but there was no mention of her or of any other progeny. It made me wonder what this was about. Do you have any idea? Apart from his wife, the only other reference to his family of marriage was "Cleary and his family travelled, settling in various countries, including Spain, Italy and the United States". When I first read that, it sort of suggested to me that there were at least 2 children. But on reflection, "his family" doesn't necessarily mean that at all. If it was just him, his wife and their sole child, the obituarist would not have gone to the trouble of spelling out "Cleary, his wife and son/daughter travelled ...". Much more concise to still say "Cleary and his family travelled ...". So, no help there. But, "his family" is not inconsistent with there being at least 2 daughters (and possibly also 1 or more sons). -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 23:58, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, but there is no such ambiguity in the Sydney Morning Herald's obituary, which clearly states that Jane, the daughter who died of cancer was his "older daughter". This implies a younger daughter. Otherwise, the writer would have written "his daughter". In any case, the page here could do with considerably more detail. There is a fair amount of stuff in the obits that could be interpolated, and it would be nice to get a photo. I'm often disappointed to see how poorly many Australian topics and themes are dealt with on WP. There just doesn't seem to be much interest in Australia by Australians. And he wrote no less than 20 novels with the lead character Malone, a Police Inspector. And while "Malone" on the disambig page has a dozen fictional characters of that name, there is no mention of him there. Why is Jon Cleary marked as of low importance to Australian fiction? He mightn't be a heavyweight like Patrick White, but he was a popular and prolific and successful author, and frankly, we don't have that many of those. Eric155 (talk) 10:01, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
