"While Wylde signed his marriage certificate with his birth name, many of his relations later adopted the surname 'Wilde', spelled with a character 'i'."
This statement is incorrect. Wylde's family used the name Wilde. His Wilde family's story (i.e. from the descendants of his siblings) is that when John Wylde arrived at Trinity as a new undergraduate he found his name on the door of his rooms to be spelt WYLDE and elected to keep it that way. At that same time some of his more distant relations began to use the spelling Wylde but the male line of that branch died out. John Wylde's own descendants used both spellings. The spelling Wylde suggested a link to a then prominent gentry family named Wylde. Eddaido (talk) 08:09, 13 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
