Accent

Can we get a source for the accent? What episode or season was he imitating Daphne in? +Hexagon1 (t) 11:31, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Season three - Look Before You Leap Decorativeedison (talk) 21:32, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

John did not lose "all traces" of his accent, as previously stated on this page. The accent remains quite evident when he says the word "stupid," (pronounces it STYEW-pid), and he frequently drops his "r"s. I changed it to say "most of his accent." Jrsightes (talk) 04:37, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

A fair number of Americans pronounce "stupid" as "STYEW-pid." Americans who pronounce pre-consonantal and final r's do not invariably pronounce every last one of them. (The first one in "over there" might or might not be dropped, for example.) When Mahoney drops them, it is generally in such positions. (See Dissimilation.) Personal life

The sentence: "In 2010 he made a guest appearance in $#@! My Dad Says as an anti-gay retired naval officer Lt. Col. Wally Durham." ought not to be under the heading of personal life. Also, naval officers aren't colonels, but commanders, though not having seen the episode it's possible the writers of $#@! My Dad Says made a mistake and not the contributor to the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.211.58.138 (talk) 23:47, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Per our guidelines, Mahoney's nationality is American

See WP:OPENPARA. Wikipedia guidelines state that we use the nationality held at the time the subject became notable. Mahoney was an American citizen for over 20 years before achieving notability, and a US resident even longer, therefore we describe him as American. I realize this is a sensitive issue for some, which is why the second sentence starts with the fact that he was born in England. Yworo (talk) 22:12, 22 February 2012 (UTC).

Perhaps being born and brought up in the UK he had citizenship of both countries (i.e., Anglo-American), I would have thought so.

More misc

  • He has in actuality a master's degree from Western Illinois University. It's on IMDB and is how he was able to teach English at university. 66.67.32.161 (talk) 17:47, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Stage credits

We specifically need to compile Mahoney's stage credits here (we have his TV and film credits, but he has also been active on the stage, with Steppenwolf Theatre Company and most recently (2014) in "at Northlight Theatre in the Chicago suburb of Skokie, where he stars in Chapatti."[1]) General Ization Talk 23:45, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

Personal life (2)

A recent series of edits said that Mr. Mahoney had been married three times and had children (names and dates being provided). Now we are told he never had been and that due to his bout with colon cancer and the resultant colostomy he has had no subsequent romantic life! I strongly suspect vandalism. Kostaki mou (talk) 23:59, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

I have removed any "information" (?) on the subject until someone can provide evidence for it. Kostaki mou (talk) 00:36, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
He's never married, and is widely believed to be gay, but he has never "come out" per se. 173.160.130.14 (talk) 03:24, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
Mahoney addressed this matter himself in 2008.[2]:

TOC: In everything I’ve read about you, I haven’t seen any mention of a partner or a romantic life. John Mahoney: Yeah, it doesn’t exist for me anymore. [Laughs] I think that’s dead and buried. Twenty-three years ago I had cancer of the colon. I had to have major surgery, and I have a colostomy. I really couldn’t have sex after that. I’m very happy by myself and with my friends, but no, I’m definitely not involved with anybody. Nor do I ever look to be.

Comedian?

Did he really qualify as a "comedian"? I don't know, I figured it was best to discuss it here. Dpm12 (talk) 03:45, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

DMY or MDY?

The subject was born in England, but lived most of his life in the U.S. He became notable while an American. Shouldn't we be using American English and MDY date formats? – Muboshgu (talk) 00:27, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

We probably should, but by consensus. I've been respecting the {{use dmy dates}} template that has existed on this article for a very long time. General Ization Talk 00:50, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
The beauty of consensus is it can change. – Muboshgu (talk) 05:30, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

How about a mixture of both? UK and US (as sometimes happens), that would seem a fair solution in my opinion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.185.188.20 (talk) 10:00, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

He was born in Britain but he's been an American citizen since he was 19, spent his entire adult life in the US, became an actor in the US, and has acted almost entirely in the US so US style is appropriate. Nixon Now (talk) 11:11, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

Bispham

For our American readers I'd just like to conform that 'Bispham' (his birthplace) is pronounced as 'Bisp-ham' (the 'h' being silent and sounded as 'Bispam' with the emphasis on the first sylable 'Bisp') and not 'Bis-pham' ('Bisfam'). Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.185.188.20 (talk) 23:41, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

Misc

Anyone know anything about his private life / sexuality?

Hi, I do know that my grandmother's friend is his neighbor in Oak Park, Illinois. --bobsmith319 04:00, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Is John Mahoney gay? one second i hear that he isn't one second i hear he is? Briaboru

http://www.geocities.com/goodnightseattle/index1.htm says he is divorced, which contradicts the article as it stands. --MartinUK 22:03, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Given that I've seen no evidence to support this theory neither before the edit was made claiming John Mahoney to be gay nor after, and that no significant discussion has taken place regarding this 'rumor,' I've removed the edit in question. LemonSmints 10:51, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

He explained in an interview in 2002 that his parents had an unhappy marriage which he feared he would repeat, so although he dated a number of women, he'd end it as soon as there was any disagreement. Then in 1985 he had colon cancer and had to have a colostomy, which made him decide a sex life was no longer feasible. It appears as though most people who claim he is gay are simply presuming that based on his being a single theatre actor, but his own actual words in interviews indicate that he was merely a straight man who was single by choice. 2605:E000:21D5:1600:5552:9590:D594:9063 (talk) 05:19, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

According to this he didn't grow up in Ohio!! http://www.geocities.com/area51/9825/mahoney/radiofour.htm

IS there any reason to say that he joined the army to become a US citizen and speed up the citizenship process? Isn't that the same thing

There was only one reason that an immigrant at that time joined the U.S. army, and it had nothing to do with citizenship. It was called the draft JohnClarknew (talk) 19:06, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
A non-citizen can't get drafted in any normal country I doubt he was drafted. +Hexagon1 (t) 11:31, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
That's right. The only time the U.S. government has ever railed over foreigners and force them to serve, was during the Civil War, when Irish immigrants would get off the cougher ships and be signed right up into service. They hinted at that in gangs of New York. Anyway, john is an amazing actor, and I doubt the rumors. but, either way, he's still a talent that I will always love. - March 3, 2008 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.218.116.201 (talk) 05:06, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

John Mahoney was 'moral core' on 'Frasier;' maybe his Catholic faith was relevant in obits?

Lancashire or England?

User NikkiMaria insists we should list Mahoney's birthplace in the infobox as "Blackpool, Lancashire". Why? Lancashire is the county Blackpool is in, but it's ultimately still in England. I keep saying "We aren't listing Chicago as Chicago, Cook County". Only makes sense, "Blackpool, England, U.K." and "Chicago, Illinois, U.S.", right?, not "Blackpool, Lancashire, U.K." and "Chicago, Cook County, U.S." Dpm12 (talk) 01:27, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

@Dpm12: Per the template documentation, "For modern subjects, the country should generally be a sovereign state; for United Kingdom locations, the constituent countries of the UK are sometimes used instead, when more appropriate in the context" (my emphasis). In other words, it can be either England or UK, not both, and either of those would be standing as the country rather than the administrative region - so if we follow the formatting of "city, administrative region, country", "Blackpool, Lancashire, U.K." or "Blackpool, Lancashire, England" are appropriate counterpoints to "Chicago, Illinois, U.S.", and "Blackpool, England, U.K." is not. Similarly, the template documentation indicates that cause of death "should only be included when the cause of death has significance for the subject's notability", which is not the case here. reference formatting issue

i'm seeing this in red for reference 27, the archived "The Birthday Party" reference: "|archive-url= is malformed: timestamp"

i read through the help section for it and can't seem to figure out how to fix it. does anyone know how to fix this? CanoeUnlined (talk) 02:26, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Fixed The archiveurl parameter requires an archive URL that includes a timestamp rather than the "*" construction you were attempting to use. General Ization Talk 02:59, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Pronunciation of surname

Anyone know how he pronounces his surname? In England, his surname is usually pronounced as the disyllabic Mah-ney (ie, the 'o' is unvoiced) but in the States it tends to be pronounced phonetically, as a trisyllabic Mah-ho-ney, with the middle syllable both voiced and stressed. As an English Mahoney, I wondered if he'd kept his 'original' pronunciation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.148.158.69 (talk) 09:11, 11 March 2011 (UTC) Well I'm a Brit and I would pronounce it as 'Mah-ho-ney' as in the US. That's all I can say apart from it is surely an Irish name.

In England, his surname is usually pronounced as the disyllabic Mah-ney (ie, the 'o' is unvoiced) I am English and I have never heard that pronunciation! Theheartof (talk) 17:34, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

Mahoney's Catholic religion

Mahoney's Catholic faith was at the center of his life and work as he told in an interview: The God Factor: Inside the Spiritual Lives of Public People, Cathleen Falsani, Author . Sarah Crichton Books/Farrar, Straus & Giroux ISBN 978-0-374-16381-5

RIP, John Mahoney: ‘I’ve always prayed to the Holy Ghost for wisdom, understanding and knowledge’

Born in Bispham, Lancashire, England

Strange that the wiki article for Bispham does not have any reference to John Mahoney. Is this his correct birthplace? 82.21.133.132 (talk) 16:56, 11 February 2018 (UTC)

Mahoney LGBT?

There's article that claims Mahoney was gay and is used as a source here. I think it's possible he was but reading that article makes me think that some of his friends may have speculated he was gay but that he never confirmed it to them. The closest it comes to an actual fact is saying someone say Mahoney with his partner but does that mean they say him with another man and assumed they were partners or that this person was actually introduced by Mahoney as his partner? The article doesn't say. It's certainly possible he was gay, and I don't think it really matters one way or another but not sure we should assume it was confirmed rather than just being speculative. Until a close friend says "Yes, he was gay" or a partner comes forward and confirms it I think we should just say it is speculation. I'm fine including it in the article but don't think we should be definitive without firm confirmation. Nixon Now (talk) 16:17, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

"...someone say Mahoney with his partner but does that mean they say him with another man..."
I assume you meant "someone saw Mahoney" or "saw him with another man"? Captain Quirk (talk) 06:13, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
