Regard and esteem for Gen. Davis, expressed through a high-quality article

I would like to make clear my high esteem for Gen. Davis and others who have served their nation in difficult and dangerous circumstances. I think it would be inappropriate to dismiss the possibility that he made certain mistakes in his career that had serious consequences, resulting even in harm, for others, but no one in such a position of responsibility is free of that risk. I think it would be intolerably unfair to address shortcomings in the service of Gen. Davis without honestly addressing the decisions and actions of his civilian superiors (elected and electors) throughout his career. My hope is that Gen. Davis will eventually find Wikipedia to be a welcoming forum to share his recollections of his honorable service, and I hope that the article will reflect highly on him, the naval aviation community, and the USMC. Would it be libelous to state in the article that Gen. Davis caused the death of Vietnamese civilians during the Vietnam War, and provide a reference supporting that statement? Thanks! JPatrickBedell 15:38, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Allegations made by family of James E. Sabow

Colonel James Sabow (1939 – January 22 1991) was a United States Marine Corps officer and aviator. He was murdered at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Orange County, California on January 22, 1991.

Col. Sabow was found shot to death in his backyard on MCAS El Toro less than ten hours after he informed General J.K. Davis that he was about to expose a criminal covert weapon and drug operation on military bases. The telegram informing Headquarters Marine Corps that Col. Sabow had committed suicide was started several hours before Col. Sabow's death, and the DoD and USG have consistently resolved the matter as a suicide from the time that the body was discovered.

A still classified 1984 document, National Security Decision Directive 138, authorized secret CIA and FBI paramilitary squads, alongside military units like the navy’s SEALs and the army’s Special Forces, to undertake sabotage and targeted killings. They continue to operate to this day both domestically and around the world.

The night before he was murdered, Colonel Sabow, who was Chief of Operations for Marine Air, Western Area, had a one hour conversation with General J.K. Davis (Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, Retired). He informed General Davis that he was going to expose criminal weapons and drug smuggling operations that he had only recently discovered that were being conducted by covert government agencies at El Toro and other United States military bases. Tragically, Colonel Sabow had no idea that General Davis, who he once served as his executive officer, was personally involved in this covert operation. Immediately after the telephone conversation, Davis contacted El Toro Base Commander, General Wayne T. Adams and Colonel Joe Underwood, both of whom were major players in the criminal activity, to arrange the killing. Commandant of the Marine Corps General Alfred Gray was notified that evening and he had his deputy in charge of Special Operations, Colonel George Griggs, arrange the assassination. Because of Colonel Sabow’s no-nonsense reputation, there was to be no delay.
