FWIW, I recall reading that Howland has more descendants than any other Pilgrim. Also that some descendants of Howland forget that they are also descended from the Tilleys. ·:·Will Beback ·:· 04:53, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Brothers

Weird Redirect for Elizabeth Tilley

I wanted to start a user page for an article on Elizabeth Tilley, wife of John Howland. I have begun the research and I feel that either Howland's article should be called "John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley" or she should have a separate article. Well, much to my surprise, when one wikifies Elizabeth Tilley it is redirected to John Howland. I think that there is enough additional information about Tilley to add her name to the current article title, or start an addition article. In any case, her name should not be redirected to his article. If there is a consensus that her name should be added to this article, I will expand it with her info. Otherwise, I would like to start a new article about her. After all, she gave birth to all those children who had all those children that everyone likes to trace their ancestry to and that is really their only collective contribution to history.--Ishtar456 (talk) 17:59, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

This article is about John Howland. If you wish to have an article about Elizabeth Tilley that is fine because she it notable, I believe, under Wikipedia guidelines, (as a Mayflower passenger). John Howland and Eliabeth Tilley's death's mentioned three times in the article

We need to check before adding a section that information is not already contained in the article. It is easy to miss Mugginsx (talk) 13:29, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia proves the old saying "Too many cooks spoil the broth". I just read the Elizabeth Tilley section and realized that it has been so chopped up and reedited since I first wrote it, that it no longer makes any sense. I tried to fix it, but then figured, what the heck. It will just get all stirred around again and need to be re-written in six months or so. What some editors do is forget to read the rest of the article and simple put what they consider important in whatever paragraph or paragraphs they may want to add. Elizabeth's paragraph is now about Elizabeth and no information is repeated in it. Information concerning John went back into the body of his article. If you or anyone else wishes to write an article about Elizabeth as you stated above, I believe she will meet Wikipedia's notability standards since she was a Mayflower passenger. Unfortunately, it may be a very small article unless perhaps further research can produce more information about her than was mentioned here. None of the other information was lost, simply added to the appropriate body of the article except for the repetitious dates of death which was deleted. The Descent of John Howland to John and Jim Harbaugh

On the day of Super Bowl XLVII between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers, managers at the genealogy website, geni.com, created ancestry profiles for both John and Jim Harbaugh, the head coaches of the Ravens and 49ers respectively. The profiles had 5000 ancestors, which is usually the limit on how many ancestors that the site can hold for any given profile, so i decided to check it out since i knew it would go back centuries, even back to royalty (which it did). There were 250 pages, so i just looked at the first 50. I then seen that John Howland was one of the ancestors of the two brothers. I know there is not a clear reference to put them on this list, but maybe these links can be used as a reference. In these links, it shows John Howland being the 10th Great Grandfather of John and Jim Harbaugh.

"Ancestors" doesn't mean "descendants"

Because the "Notable Descendants" section of this article uses Wikipedia's "ancestors-of" template, the actual bold-faced headline in the box automatically reads "Ancestors of John Howland (Mayflower passenger)". But the actual content of the box is all about his descendants--no ancestors are discussed. I don't know how to fix this, but it would be great if somebody did, because as it stands it's pretty silly. pnh (talk) 11:30, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Signatory

This article says that John Howland signed the Mayflower Compact. The Article on the Mayflower Compact does not list him as a signatory. Given his status as a slave at the time of the signing, it makes sense he would not have signed, even though he was likely one of the Drafters of the Document. Can someone verify and modify? Agree. Yes he was listed in the article as the 13th signer and as for being a slave - there were no slaves as there was no slavery in England or Holland where these people came from. He was an indentured servant to John Carver which was not slavery but an agreement for the payment of their passages, room, board, food, etc. for a certain number of years. As for drafters, there were probably few people that could read or write with the exception of probably Carver, Brewster and Bradford though Howland may have been literate or had some verbal input. I believe the deciding factor in who signed the document was their age. Mugginsx (talk) 17:06, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

This is utter rubbish. Howland was Carver's servant but Carver dies April 5, 1621, there are no later years for him. "In this month of Aprill whilst they were bussie about their seed, their Govr (Mr. John Carver) came out of ye feild very sick, it being a hott day; he complained greatly of his head, and lay downe, and within a few howers his sences failed, so as he never spake more till he dyed, which was within a few days after." Edit recommendations

At the start of the article, I made some minor edits under the Mayflower and Speedwell section, but given that this is Howland's page, not the Pigrim/Mayflower page, I would recommend that we combine this section with the "the voyage section" and reduce the content not specific to Howland. It helps to have context, but that has to be balanced with focus on Howland. Since this would be a more appreciable change, I thought I'd bring it here first.

Additionally, I think this article could use a review for redundancy and for style, there are some sections that have potential for improvement.12.11.127.253 (talk) 14:18, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

Mayflower passenger George Soule outlived Howland

In the last section ( concerning Howland's death ), it states: "John Howland died February 23, 1672/3 at the age of 80, having outlived all other male Mayflower passengers except John Alden and John Cooke..."
