His brother's name inspired Tolkein
editI just heard the "No Such thing as a fish" podcast; according to that John G.'s brother was Samuel Gamgee - who supplied medical material during WW 1. Tolkien used his name as a basis for Samwise Gamgee in LOTR. He also married Samwise to Dot Cotton; named after another type of material. Interesting enough for the article? His brother was Sampson Gamgee. The link to Tolkien is mentioned on his page although it isn't referenced. Graemec2 (talk) 20:48, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
