Damilola Taylor

In an interview published in The Resident (http://www.theresident.co.uk/london-culture-events/john-boyega-star-wars-peckham-family/), John Boyega himself says that he did not know Damilola Taylor. Is not English

I hate to be "racist", but the term "English" refers to the ethnic group that has lived in England since the Middle Ages, not Nigerians born in Peckham. This is racism. An 'English person' has nothing to do with where their parents were born (or their parent's parents, etc). If you're saying it's okay for him to be called British then you're also saying it's okay to call him English, as England is part of Britain. Saying he is British but not English sounds like you're saying he's from Wales, Ireland or Scotland, is that the case? No, you're obviously suggesting that all black people born in England aren't English. Not so much racism, as language ambiguities. "English" as a nationality applies since John Boyega was born in England. For that matter, so does "British" as England is part of Great Britain, and until Brexit happens, he could claim to be "European". In terms of race/ethnic group/ancestry; he would probably be what the UK census form would categorise as either "Black: English/Welsh/Scottish/Northern Irish/British", "Black: English", or "Black: Nigerian" . Interview with GQ

Hi there, I am not sure how to incorporate content from John Boyega's interview with GQ magazine in September 2020 where he talks about his experiences with the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and Black Lives Matter. I am not sure whether it is suitable for Wikipedia. His Wookieepedia article does mention the interview.

This is the proposed passage: During an interview with GQ magazine in early September 2020, Boyega criticised Disney's for sidelining his character Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, remarking "I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up."

Hi @Nardog - I see your question has been unanswered and I've removed it. There doesn't appear to be actual verification of him having dual British and Nigerian citizenship, and I fail to see why him hypothetically having Nigerian citizenship would be relevant to a man whose life and career have been primarily in the United Kingdom and his breakout role was in a Hollywood production (America). See WP:ETHNICITY.

I think I'd prefer actual confirmation from Boyega himself, seeing as how his page has claimed he was a dual national for years to avoid potential circular reporting. And if he does identify with his Nigerian heritage, that is no different than many other children of immigrants who identify with their ancestry. I'm sure lots of people in the Indian or Japanese diasporas may identify with their heritage even if they do not hold dual citizenship (those respective countries may have laws against simultaneously holding dual citizenship).

It looks problems started around late 2020, when someone added a link that did not actually confirm dual citizenship, but did confirm British citizenship.[1] Since then, his page has claimed he's a dual national without any proof.[2][3] Clear Looking Glass (talk) 14:33, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

To explain and expand.

The Woman King made 94 million at the box office on a budget of 50 million. As per the basic box office formula, a movie must make anywhere from double to three times its budget (usually 2.5) back as it needs to pay extra expenses such as renting out movie theatres. Thusly The Woman King lost anywhere from 6 to 56 million. Meaning that the non-cited claim it was a box office success is incorrect. This article goes into further detail

To correct myself after doing further research it seems that using the following formula

Dom = domestic gross

OS = overseas gross (or worldwide gross - domestic gross)

China = Chinese gross

Domestic breakeven, d = budget/(0.5 + 0.25*China/Dom + 0.4*(OS-China)/Dom)

Worldwide breakeven = d*(1 + China/Dom + (OS-China)/Dom)

Breakeven multiplier = Worldwide breakeven / budget

Woman King needed only 2.3 times its budget to break even instead of the estimated 2.5, the article I sited was too general. It needed roughly 116 Million to break even, meaning that, to be accurate it did not flop by 6-56 million but by roughly 22 million. 92.207.130.115 (talk) 13:41, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
