Defective sentence, meaning obscure edit

In the Marriage and death section there is the sentence:

"John is said to have invited Martin Luther, arguing that, if his father was adamantly against Luther, he would for Luther when he inherited the throne." [My italics]

This has been in the text ever since the article was translated from German Wikipedia in 2011 by HansM, who has not been active on English Wikipedia since August 2018 (so may not see a ping). My very rudimentary German is not up to deducing from the original article what the intended meaning is. Can anybody shed light? {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.205.224.154 (talk) 05:21, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
