Complete re-haul

I was working on this in my sandbox and have changed the discography to comply with the Manual of Style according to the WikiProject pages, and examples like Pink Floyd discography and Metallica discography. The new style is much more surfable, easier to use and tidier, with more releases and articles. Please discuss here before completely changing it back, I strongly believe this is for the better. I hate this, but if it's what you want at least get your facts straight - do not list North American Are You Experienced together with the rest of the world issue it is quite different a separate LP, as is Smash Hits, also the North American singles singles are in almost every case different from the rest of world (mainly B sides, but also A's) A few LP's were also not released in North America. Are You Experienced is one LP, the fact that it had different track listings is irrelevant; I'm pretty sure you can't just list the same released twice. Smash Hits also just has a different track listing, and when you say "A few LP's were also not released in North America", what are you referring to? Andre666 (talk) 06:51, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Just what is your definition of an LP? If the track listing differs it's a different LP, especially in the case of Are You Experienced which in its original release did not include the first three UK singles. The US version included those single A-sides, but at the exclusion of three tracks from the original release. It's very important for an encyclopedia to distinguish between such things and not regard fundamental differences such as track listings as "irrelevant". -- Mickraus (talk) 12:12, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Different track listings based on the country of issue is a common problem with many LPs, even LP versus cassette versions of the same LP. The name under which an "LP" is released is the LP; different versions of it are subsets and should be listed and identified as such. The real problem, I guess, is which is the master to which the others are subsets -- 'US version is always the master' will certainly ruffle some feathers somewhere.

On another note... I have a copy of "High, Live, and Dirty", a red vinyl LP with a release date of 1980 that was recorded in a club somewhere. A Google search for "hendrix" +"high, live" results in release dates of 1980 and 1978. Is this one of the bootlegs? If so, the bootleg(s) should be identified with the name rather than simply the place of recording. In reference to this, I am most probably going to split the discography up into Jimi Hendrix discography (the regular one) and Jimi Hendrix posthumous discography (containing, obviously, all posthumous releases. Rolling Stone, Vol 1. No. 4, dated January 20, 1968 - features Hendrix on the cover with a story about a sketchy, dated, bad quality "official" bootleg being released by Capitol called "Got That Feeling: Jimi Hendrix plays, Curtis Knight sings". Tribute albums?

Who sneaked in tribute albums to a discography? A discography is the collected works of the artist - not of everyone who ever played his songs. If Jimi didn't play on it - it's not part of Jimi's discography - very simple. MarkinBoston (talk) 03:09, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Highway Child?

At the EP part, it says 'Highway Child' instead of 'Highway Chile'. Is it really a different song, or a simple mistake by the guy who typed it there? Merger proposal

Merge Jimi Hendrix posthumous discography with Jimi Hendrix discography. I think there's absolutely no need to have two separate pages. We don't have two separate pages for Elvis Presley. Randomuser112 (talk) 02:07, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Agree. I definitely support merging this page into the regular JH discography. Having two pages seems unnecessarily confusing to readers and also unnecessarily hard to navigate. Thanks for assuming good faith. Hendrix biographer Shapiro (Electric Gypsy) and AllMusic both list the Monterey album as part of his discography. So it appears that this is considered a "Hendrix album", although it has a equal credit with Otis Redding. Woodstock is not listed as such, but contains "The Star Spangled Banner", which is one of his best-known recordings, along with the only other officially released recordings by his interim "Gypsy Sun and Rainbows" band (at least until they were re-released years later). So, it definitely deserves a place in his discography. I think a separate section for one entry is unnecessary; the notes included next to the album titles (along with the album links) advise the reader exactly what they are and should avoid any confusion. Likewise, Electric Jimi Hendrix was an official release and is listed by Shapiro. The note next to the title explains it. Readers of an encyclopedia should expect more detail and comprehensiveness than what they can find on most music sites. Australian charts

The recently added column for Australian singles links to the Kent Music Report, which states that it was compiled "from May 1974 through to 1998". Since this this discography only includes releases up the Hendrix's death on September 18, 1970, Kent would not contain any pertinent information. Additionally, the source cited is a forum with postings by various members, including dodo_fleet. The Hendrix infomation was posted by BeansterBarnes on June 15, 2008. This doesn't appear to meet the WP:CHARTS#General Guidelines of "published by a recognized reliable source" and possibly "covers sales or broadcast outlets from multiple sources". Currently, ARIA Charts (1988-present) and Hung Medien (1988-present) are listed in WP:GOODCHARTS (Hung Medien appears to be the forum site used, but since it only dates back to 1988, does not include any Hendrix pre-9/1970 releases).

For layout considerations, adding more columns for each country leads to crowding and is the reason for the "Other" column (see Talk:Jimi Hendrix posthumous discography#Table configuration). By hovering the mouse over the note link in that column, the reader can see the various countries and chart positions for each entry. It is a more visually appealing solution, without any loss of information. If a reliable source can be found for pre-9/1970 Hendrix Australian releases (or any other territory), adding them to the "Other" column is a simple procedure. —Ojorojo (talk) 15:51, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
