Autobiography

I am almost completely certain that the creator of this article was Jim MacNeill. The article was created by a user named "MacNeill". The note provided upon creation by that user was "CV of Jim MacNeill". Here is the link: [Creation]

User MacNeill's entire contribution history consists of six edits to this articles in June 2006. [contributions] For what it's worth, the user has really made no attempt to conceal their identity or do any of the other silly and elabortatee things self-editors have been known to do.

At 8,317 bytes, the initial post has been relatively untouched since its creation. Before today, no one edit has exceeded 250 bytes and no editor has added references that were not provided by user MacNeill. In keeping with the note provided upon creation labeling the work as a "CV", the article up to this point is essentially a resume. That will be changing through the addition of many more sources, as well as adding sources from newspapers and books discussing Mr MacNeill's policy work, instead of references that strictly announce positions, awards and degrees. The point is not to correct these issues by creating a hit piece. Understanding the policy changes implemented during office provides intellectual and historical context and not merely controversy.

Autobiography is not explicitly in violation of Wikipedia policy. It is "strongly discouraged" and a red flag for a conflict of interest (See Wikipedia:Autobiography#Creating_an_article_about_yourself ). I note this here for informational purposes only in the unlikely event that this proves to be problematic in further editing of this piece.

Problems with References.

There are multiple issues with the sources cited in this article. I am creating this section to discuss them. Where resolution is possible, I will list repaired and updated references here. Where it is not I will list dead links, incorrect citations and other issues under this heading. Mr MacNeill's career in government is a long one and at least IMO he meets notability criteria. I feel that deletion of the article should be viewed as an absolute last result and would be preferred only if and when it is demonstrated that no quality references are available, even for a stub. I have begun by adding tags to broken links that cannot be repaired. To confirm broken links, I start by clicking the link. I then attempt a site search for multiple combintations of Jim MacNeill (ony last name, James instead of Jim, one "L", etc). I then attempt a google site search using syntax as follows:

site:website-example.ext "Jim MacNeill"

I use multiple MacNeill combos there also. Finally I perform a cursory attempt to find the same information from a similar source using Google to attempt to determine a domain name change or something similar. Only when all of these fail to I label a link as dead. I am temporarily leaving the dead link labels pending complete cleanup of the article. Of course eventually they ought to be removed along with the bad link.

• Order of Canada - broken link was reforwarded from www.gg.ca to archive.gg.ca. This reference was listed twice in the reference list. Fixed.
• Canada Who's Who 1997 - The link provided is broken. The domain provided has no content on MacNeill and in appears to just be the publisher's page; in other words, there is no referenced content on this website at all. If Who's Who in fact lists him and we want to cite it (theres debate about its use as a source) than the reference should be for something like a book or periodical, not a website and certainly not the website listed.
• Caspian Development Advisory Panel - This entire domain is offline. Because the reference is not cited inline I have no idea what information was gleaned from it and so no way to get that information from another source.
• Volvo Environment Prize - This link was broken, apparently as the result of a site redesign on the cited page. I was able to identif MacNeilk's entry on the same domain and correct the entry. Fixed.

Sentence Lack Attribution

This statement lacks proper attribution: "In 1990, he was asked by Per Gyllenhammar, Chief Executive of Volvo, to assist him in designing the Volvo Foundation’s Environment Prize and has served as a member (and now Chairman) of the Prize Jury ever since." Our references confir MacNeill as a "founding member" of the Volvo prize, however we lack a citation on the date or the personal request from Gyllenhammar. Once larger issues with references are fixed this needs to be addressed (unless some friendly sould would like to help before then!) Jay Dubya (talk) 14:03, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
