first ever winter solo attempt? edit

- Well spotted! I'm not sure, but I'll try to find out. It might be down to the definition of "solo" though; some sources will call a climb a solo if the climber was part of a team but did the last section of the route alone (e.g. Hermann Buhl on Nanga Parbat in 1953), while a stricter (and probably more modern) view is that to the climber has to be entirely alone from the foot of the mountain to the summit for it to count as a genuine solo (e.g. Reinhold Messner on Nanga Parbat in 1978 or Everest in 1980). Lafaille did the latter; possibly Wielicki did the former, though I'd have to check. Annoyingly, I seem to have cited that sentence to the wrong source, so I'm not sure exactly where I read that it would have been the first winter-solo of any 8000-er, and one of the references is no longer available online. Ho-hum. I'll remove the clause until we can work out exactly what it should say. Iain99Balderdash and piffle 08:02, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Iain99, Thanks for your long reply!! You're right, and I asked too fast: According to the discussion page of "eight thousander", Wielicki seems to have been the only one of a group to reach the summit, but not a solo climber. Thanks anyways!! -Ibn Battuta (talk) 03:33, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
