Jarrod Kenny's career start year edit

Just wanted to note here for future reference the timeline of edits that I believe led to the disinformation online surrounding Jarrod Kenny's career start year.

In October 2013, I added an infobox to this page and included a "career_start" date of 2002. I did not include a reference but I recall Eurobasket's profile for Jarrod Kenny had "2002 Harbour Heat" listed. 2002 remained in the infobox until January 2015 when I changed it to 2005 based on this December 2008 source which stated "Kenny played for the Heats for four seasons". Hours later however I changed it back to 2002 for reasons that are unclear – presumably again falling back on Eurobasket which is for the most part very trustworthy.

Later in 2015, Kenny's name and story was elevated and became more prevalent due to his signing with the Perth Wildcats. This led to many online news outlets and websites undoubtedly relying on Wikipedia for information and thus the "2002 + New Zealand NBL + Harbour Heat" narrative was made widespread. If you type in Google "jarrod kenny harbour heat 2002", you will find many reputable New Zealand news outlets (nzherald and Stuff) and even official teams/leagues (NZNBL, Hawke's Bay Hawks, Perth Wildcats) stating that Kenny's career began in 2002.

In doing more digging today, I have been able to find old sources from the Harbour Heat that proves that Kenny did not start his NZNBL career until 2004. Kenny was a new addition to the Heat's roster in 2004 and on the 2005 roster he had 7 career games listed to his name. This career games source then lists the NZNBL career histories for the 2005 Harbour Heat team – it includes Jarrod Kenny's 7 games and lists 2004 being his first and only year.

It's frustrating to know that I contributed to this online mirroring and unfortunately now his career is over, the damage is irreparable.

For what it's worth, hopefully this explanation can provide some clarity. DaHuzyBru (talk) 06:46, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
